Wimbledon 2021 WCs - women

Initial Wimbledon Q list has just been posted on TF, with 228 Hogemkamp currently the last one in at the moment, but a couple of obvious potential main draw withdrawals instantly spring to mind.

Harriet, Fran, and Sam all comfortably inside.

Poor Fran - she definitely deserves a wildcard, based on what she has done over the last 12 months. I'd have only put Harriet ahead of her in the queue for one.

 I agree.

So Nottm WCs should be announced this week, maybe even tomorrow. What are we expecting? Is it 3 WCs and up to 2 top 20 WCs, possibly becoming normal WCs if not taken?

The likes of Andreescu, maybe Bertens should probably consider requesting one.

QWCs as well - will Freya get one with it being her local event, probably shouldn't really on current form.

Would be amazing but can't see it happening. Both are entered for Berlin the week after aren't they? Can't see Anreescu risking her body for a 250 in Nottingham. Bertens is a mess right now. She doesn't seem to be able to get it together at all. Maybe Martic? or possibly Rogers.

Yeah, fair point if they are playing in Germany the week after, probably not too much point. I've kind of forgotten the full top 20 WC criteria to be honest - it's previous slam winner (Andreescu), previous PM winner (Bertens), former world #1 I think, and then there's something to do with top 10 and top 20, but don't know the exact, like current, year end etc.

Martic might just about qualify based on a top 20 ranking, but Shelby certainly wouldn't, and she would be relying on a very generous LTA normal one if she were to get one, which I can't really see, and would personally prefer going to a Brit, whereas a Top 20 one doesn't really take that away from them.

A few other big names out already, Muguruza, Ostapenko, Kerber (although she has big commitments to the German grass swing), even Kuznetsova I guess, although she doesn't really come across as a big name anymore to me personally, and I wouldn't really consider a 'draw' to the event, more like a fairly standard mid ranked player in the field.

For w/c 14/06 Muguruza is on the Berlin entry list with Andreescu, Kerber and Martic, as well as Riske who might have been another option. Ostapenko is in Brimingham

I thought the Nott'm WCs would have been announced by now with the event starting in 3 days, or at least the safe options anyway (if they are waiting for any higher profile Top 20 ones). I know it's Wiki, but further to RedS's post on the previous page, Wiki is now showing Harriet, along with Katie B and Fran, so hopefully those are the normal ones.

I thought Konjuh might have been an option for a non top 20 WC as a former champ, but she is seemingly playing the clay 125k event in her home country next week (as a WC).

Well, assuming it is someone in the know editing Wiki, Venus has a WC to Birmingham.

I'm really happy Fran got one, Harriet and Katie B less of a surprise.

Posted this in the Mens section thought Id copy over here.

Was just trying to find out if the WC play-offs were happening this year. Don't appear to be on going by the following at the below link. I assume this is so the LTA/AELTC can give them out to whom they want this year. As can't see why they can't play a tournament as plenty of tennis being played.

www.lta.org.uk/globalassets/play/professional-development/documents/wimbledon-wild-card-policy.pdf

Please note for 2021 the Wild Card Play-off event will not take place due to the on-going
Covid-19 pandemic so all Qualifying Wild cards will be awarded by the AELTC and the LTA
recommendations will be as per outlined in this document.

Ugh, I think the play offs are a great thing and I struggle to see how they can't be held safely e.g. on outside courts at Eastbourne Thursday/Friday...

That policy is an utter shambles compared to the comprehensive and sensible one they have for the other wildcards. It's basically absolutely meaningless. Plus it's totally contradictory, they say up top it's recommendations of 8 across both main draw and qualies. Then they sat all qualies will be allocated via recommendations.

And given this policy is for this year, having all the stuff about what would normally happen for the play-offs is a waste of time. So poorly written and unhelpful for the players.

I suspect Tara and Eden have done enough to secure qualifying wildcards based on Nottingham. Not sure Beth's win over Em will be enough.

And "no rankings threshold" is a ploy not just to include favourites who wouldn't make it otherwise, but to ensure others who would meet criteria but don't 'fit' are excluded. Very hard for players and their teams to know what they need to do.

So then let's assume Harriet, Katie, and Fran will get MDWCs for now, and anything else is a bonus, how would you rank the QWC candidates in order of how likely you see them getting one? I assume it'll be 8 recommendations, and then the 9th being the U18 winner?

My list would be (in world ranking order, not preference):-

WC: Harriet, Fran, Jodie, Katie B, Emma (maybe)
QWC: Sam, Katie S if playing), Naiktha, Tara, Eden and Matilda.

Runners up, Emily W-S, Beth. Naomi seems to have abandoned singles, and Lissey is chasing doubles points in Portugal.

I don't think any of the others are at the right level at the moment to even be considered.

QWC: Emma, Sam, Jodie, Naiktha and Tara,

By rankings though, I believe we have some players automatically in qualies - such as Sam.

I think though that the wildcard committee will probably give only a qualifying wildcard to Katie S and may put Emma into the main draw. I think that Matilda, Katie S and Emma will be the ones that are most close cut - a lot depends on which non-British players they also think deserve a main draw wildcard, but on the last occasion that they gave the wildcards, hardly anyone actually got main draw wildcards. Tara never gets any favours from the committee, so I expect she will get nothing.

Does anyone know when the decision is likely to be made? I am assuming in about a week's time, so any performances influencing them have to be this week at the latest, which probably only therefore affects Tara

MDWC Harriet, Fran, Katie B nailed on barring injury. Jodie, Katie S and Sam if they can show some form over the next 2 weeks
qWC Jodie, Kaite and Sam if not in MD nailed on for qWC, Emma R, Naiktha, Matilda. No one else really stands out, maybe Amelia Bisset, Jasmine conway but they're outsiders
