Hmm, so it's basically the same field as the other week, but significantly weakened with Kim and Annali coming in for Lissy and Ella T. I was pleased Emily Ap took the initial title, but I wasn't really invested in the field, and thus only saw bits and pieces. A notable lack of 300-500 players, and reasonably promising youngsters didn't really help IMO, and this is worse as you're replacing the highest ranked player who went 5-0, but didn't win it all, with someone who will be chuffed with 4 games a set (maybe outside of playing Annali).

Well said, Ace. That's a pretty weak collection of players. Especially compared with the men.

If our better players are doing other things, it would have been nice to see Eva Shaw or a couple of the more promising juniors - Kylie is the only junior there.

You seldom see odds that imply such one sided matches.....

The predicted winners' odds are:
1.01
1.02
1.05
1.1
1.22
1.4

Definitely CD. I think they do have a cap on U18 players (although they did break that a few times last year...), but there would have been a lot of names that would have made it a lot more interesting. Many of the younger players from last season will be in the US for college, but still plenty of promising youngsters around. Someone like Sofia Johnson would have been a good addition as she literally always gives a good account of herself whenever I've watched her play. Then the likes of Sonay (who's now 20 so wouldn't affect any age limit) and Amelia B played at least 2 of the weeks last year, and both would have been welcome from my POV.

I don't know what Ali Collins is up to these days, or where she's based, but this could have been a good springboard for her to get some matches / wins together.

Presumably they have some rules for entry ie by world ranking on a certain date? It cant be invitation only given there is a points table to ensure has integrity?

I was wondering where some of our players were at the moment. Lissey is still on the acceptance list for Sharm so may have travelled, Eden was in Dubai last week, not sure about Naomi. No sign of Emma or Maia recently, and I don't believe Katy D or Jodie are fit enough to play at the moment. So the field is probably as good as it is going to be, unless some of those named appear again.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe one or two of those names at the top end you mentioned could have given it a boost TA. I was mainly thinking of Maia as I knew that she hasn't played on the tour for a while, so wouldn't be at an overseas venue, and gave this a go one week last year, but no idea where she is, or if she is recovering from injury. Controversial I know, because tennis could be the furthest thing from her mind at the moment, and I don't want to open up a can of worms given the sensitivity of the subject, but when you see the likes of Dan Cox in the men's, and Andrew Watson appearing the other week after giving up tennis in December 2019, someone like Gabi appearing as a one off for a bit pocket money, before going back to her art, might not have been too much of a long shot, although it would of course have been a pleasant surprise.

I was trying to look through the fields last year, but it's tough because the thread was so long that it's really hard to navigate through the pages, but I'm sure you had the likes of Amelia R, Holly S, and Charlotte Russell all playing in the same week, despite the supposed age restrictions, there was definitely 3 young'uns, so if you did have say 3 of Sonay, Amelia B, Sofia, Eva ahead of Kim, Annali, Danielle, then it would have been sooo much better.

I think the likes of Eliz, Tanysha, and Nadia's stock have all significantly decreased since the Summer series last year considering their recent tour/domestic results, and Kim, Annali, and Danielle are effectively numbers makers, so without wanting to sound harsh, there's just not enough circa top 300 players, or potential circa top 300 players for me to be particularly invested.

I thought the money was supposed to be pretty decent for players at this level?

Well the £500 appearance fee is enough to make a difference for those at the bottom of the table, when you compare it with W15 prize money ($294 for round 2, $147 for round one, nothing for qualifiers). The prize money breakdown hasn't been published as far as I can see, but it is £3,750 for the week's winner and £3,000 for the runner up, and in the summer all but the 12th player got something.

As a comparison, 4250 total is close to what the qf stage in Monterrey this week would pay, so decent money indeed. The money is also more than Liam Broady earned as RU in Biella this past week.

Yes, decent money. A W25 winner gets $3,935 - and we haven't had many GB winners recently !

Yes, I'm happy that the money goes to the adults, in many ways - they need it more than juniors.

But, in terms of adults, I would have liked to see US college players, or Maia, Katy Dunne, or Ali Collins, or Tiffany Williams, or any number of players who - off the top of my head - are significantly better than Annali and Kim. And, if not available (why not?), then some of the higher juniors would have been welcome.
