Other events, 2021 - week 7

Looks like the British action this week is in Dakar, Senegal, where 4 boys are playing and 2 girls.

Derreck Chen is also in J1 action down in Paraguay.

I am still left wondering why, particularly at Dakar, Senegal, as a place to have 6 of our top juniors, but...

Agreed, junior itf Cat 5 in West Africa should not be an essential trip. The rankings will even out in the end when all are free to travel and compete once its safe to do so. It seems a race to gain easier points. Havent seen many GB juniors at the tougher European events of late.

Absolutely. I don't understand why g4 and g5 juniors couldn't be regionally based somehow. Then when players do well and build up some points they might travel further for the higher grades. Those who live other than in the uk, but are gb players, could be registered to play in a different region quite easily.

Out of interest , do any juniors make money out of tennis? Presumably they can get sponsorship, can it cover their costs and provide an income for the top ones ? Or is it purely amateur sport ?

I think for the vast majority of these juniors its self/family funded.

But William Jansen+ are into the finals of the doubles

No more interest in Turkey, J5, as Matt Southcombe lost out.

However unsure I am about the merits related to Covid, well done so far to Will and good luck in the final
