Nice win for Katie S - I rate her very much and so want her to have a good season. Missing out on qualifying for the Aussie Open by one place must have been very hard and she could do with a good tournament here to raise her confidence and her ranking. If she can get her head right, she is a contender and great prospect, no question.
I hear Katie S is now training in Spain. This could be a great move for her as training more on clay with the Spanish methods of coaching should make her body more robust and hopefully she would have less injury problems in the future. It will be interesting if all her past problems with injury start to disappear as a lot of British based girls have more than their fair share of injuries.

Agreed - but Katie S's mental fragility and feeling worthless/seriously depressed whenever she loses has been probably a bigger problem for her than the injuries. Her huge success as a junior has probably had a major factor in that - numerous players have found that it is one thing to be feted as a superstar in the children's tournaments and quite another to make it in the adult game. It is hard mentally from going from a giant in a small pond to a minnow in the ocean.

Agree Andy. And yes, she is still a top 100 potential player, and then see from there.

But she clearly still has the desire to play tennis and improve unlike Gabriella Taylor.

Unfair and unnecessary. Taking a bit of time away to pursue other interests didn't do Ash Barty any harm and it's Gabriellas life to do as she chooses. She clearly does have plenty of drive as she isn't sitting at home fretting over what the likes of you think of her.

I think that is the case for all of our best young prospects - Fran, Katie S, Kate B, Emma and possibly Harriet. The key thing is first to get them in the Top 100 - then when they are playing the top players, week in week out, some will learn fast and improve a lot and become really huge and others won't. Second guessing who will do that is really difficult and actually probably a bit unfair before they get the chance to prove themselves. I think all the players as they come through have a learning curve that gets steeper and steeper as they improve. The likes of Brady, Muchova and Pegula for instance will have probably learnt quite a lot from the Aussie Open this year; the key is to get our best players into the position where they have the chance to play the best players, to really find out which bits of their game are good enough, what they need to change and what needs improving. Anyway baby steps for Katie S, but a much needed win for her.
It was meant to be on around 6.30ish, and I was wondering why it was well delayed, but I think they might have changed venues from indoors to outdoors. It doesn't look like you can stream the matches any more either unfortunately.
Saw a few seconds before requiring a subscription.
Of Katie's match? Could you provide the link please if so?
She's just taken the first set 6-3.
Go to web.playsight.com posted earlier, (registration required) and the court links are under USTA National Campus Player Development, but a "subscribed members only" message comes up after a few seconds. Don't know why the Bains match wasn't effected earlier.
Thanks Dodrade. I thought the streamed indoor matches yesterday might have been as good as it got, but Katie's is currently on there, and free.

I wasn't having a go at Taylor, merely pointing out that for all Katie's mental struggles she still wants to continue in the sport. Gabi with similar troubles made a different choice.

Great start to the decider as well, Talaba had 40-0 in both games, but Katie won them both. 2-0*
Talaba very frustrated, flung her racket, but still using it.
ANOTHER game where Talaba was 40-0 up and broken again. Threw in a DF and looks to be crumbling. *4-1. Hopefully she can see this out as would be a very good win.
