Another close tie break but Millie lost it 8-10.

The MTO came at a change of ends, just after Millie lost 8 points in a row from *5-3 30-0. So I would presume it was for her, but she battled well from there on in.

Main draw is out, not good for Freya, and no qualifiers in her half of the draw, so no easy matches

What a disastrous run of results. It just seems like disaster after disaster with British tennis at all levels. Clearly the coaching in this country is inadequate And we cant blame it on the weather as they seem to produce better players in colder countries. If I was Armarnis Parents I would be thinking about getting her on the next flight back to Spain. I wont even be following main draw of this tournament as I dont have much optimism anymore.

While a bit disappointing, I find these a strange set of results to be attributing as "disastrous". Our players were outranked, and at least Millie is one player who continues to show that she has moved up a few steps lately.

Re your wider point there have of course been many discussions about the general failings in British tennis, and no doubt there will be many in the future.

Yes disastrous is not really the word for it. I very much doubt any of these players will make a living out of tennis. I got a bit of stick for referring to them as backpacker players a few years ago. I wasnt necessarily saying this to be harsh just highlighting the reality. Im sure the girls are having great life experiences, particularly in times like this and you never know one of them might be able to make a living eventually on the doubles or coaching circuit.

Tennis is unique from a lot of other sports in that we can follow players easily at all levels. As long as they are having fun and experiences then it shouldnt matter to Joe public what the outcome. Look at Gabi Taylor for example, its a harsh sport and glad she is happy with her artwork away from tennis. As long as the individual is happy thats what matters.

Some of the players have obvious talent however unfortunately they all seem to be based in the UK. Why cant we produce top level professional tennis players in this country. It is obviously related to the coaching or lack of. We are all born with the same arms and legs as the kids in Spain, USA, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic and France and all of our best pros over the past few years have been nurtured abroad I mean look at Konta she was discarded from the Lta at 16 for apparently not being good enough even though she had very good results on clay as a junior which is hard for a British girl and then as soon as she packed her bags and went abroad within a few years shes getting to the late stages of Grand Slams. The Lta Need to try and persuade our best players to go and train abroad with coaches who have seen it and done it.Some of these girls will be up against American players whos fathers own NFL teams or federations like the USA who pay for all the requirements of their top juniors no matter how much it costs whilst our federations throw a measly 25K a year at our so-called prospects and somehow think they are doing enough to enable our top top players to be able to compete with the best players from other countrys. Its a joke and Im just a tennis fan and I feel embarrassed as its been going on for decades yet nothing changes.Sick of it I am! Or do we all just give up hope and say we are crap and everyone is better than us but not try and identify the reason?

Tennis is mainly a middle class sport in this country. Its why we have a limited pool of talent compared to other countries. Some of the talented young players that fail to make the grade cant afford to play the game or have the level of coaching required. Until we address that fact then the likes of Andy Murray will be rare. And I appreciate he was rather fortunate as well.

Very fortunate. Fortunate to be able to get out of this country with better coaches and conditions.

Indeed he was. Theres no chance he would have been as successful. Very sad that Jamies career was affected.

I also wouldn't go for disastrous. As said, they're nearly all playing up.

But definitely a bit disappointing - and today didn't get any better:

R1:- Freya Christie (GBR) WR665 lost to Shalimar Talbi (BLR) WR360 [2] 4-6 2-6
