Weeks 6 & 7 - Australian Open, Melbourne, Australia Hard

Thursday matches in Rd 2 - Tsitsipas v Kokkinakis, that is mouth watering; and De Minaur v Cuevas should be a good match to keep an eye on.

I was disappointed with the result as I really wanted Dan to win. I thought he had he better chance of progressing in the tournament. However all credit to Cam who played a good match, I thought - hitting the ball well and with very few UEs. Dan needed to get off to a quick start and win in 3 as by the 5th set he had nothing left. Best of luck to Cam now in the next round.

Apparently Dan had decided pre Xmas he wouldnt play the week before slams again as he felt it took away from his slam performances. Of course, last week he had no choice but having had such a good week, it clearly shows how good a message that was to himself, and something he should go back to implementing.

 Yup, agreed.

-- but on the upside, he has an ATP trophy on his CV now.

 Yes.

Same as with Sinner. Really difficult to get going again properly in a new tourney, having just won the last one - but at least they WON the last one smile

A chance?

So Safoullian won the junior of title here in 2015 and was junior no.2. On the other hand has never won a GS match before. Hopefully Cam can win this.

Yes, Kokkinakis has been on/off injured for years now so lovely to see him win at home.

Fucsovics beats (17) Wawrinka 7-5 6-1 4-6 2-6 7-6(9)

As well as being 2 sets up, Fucsovics served for the match at *5-3 in the final set. But he found himself 3 MPs down at *6-9 in the TB before taking the last 5 points for the win.

Not surprised by the Stan comeback. Very surprised that he then didn't get across the line.

I like Fuci. Stan had covid over Christmastime.

Not a British issue but I see Karatsev a qualifier beat his opponent Gerasimov by the scoreline  6-0 6-1 6-0. This is a very one sided scoreline for a 5 set mens match. Just short of a triple bagel which is very rare in Grand Slam matches.

Gerasimov beat (25) Benoit Paire in 4 sets on Monday. Must have over-celebrated!

Kyrgios comes from behind to beat Humbert in 5 sets.

Always a little more interesting with Nick around and he now plays Thiem in R3.

Yes, enjoyed that

(and leaves the French with a terribly thin event, short of some spectacular one-off run by the three remaining hopes, with Kiki one round behind, as well)
