Tennis is a crazy sport sometimes. She was dead and buried and hit the line on 3 match points down at 2-5. Now on serve at 4-5, big turnaround from nowhere.
Sadly not to be goes down 6-4 in the second. Key point was at 30-30 when Katie was hitting some big shots and came forward but let the ball bounce to weakly net. Disappointing performance bar the last 3 games, especially in the first set where she wasnt in it at all but shes fit and healthy and is set for a fit season where she should get back into the top 200 fairly soon.
Yes, still good to see Katie back to the standard she is with surely much more to come if she stays fit and healthy.
She's always been a bit of a fighter and I was starting to have real hopes ( and regrettting I hadn't plunged in on a bet when she was MPs down ). Tellingly though for our general combined lack of optimism for the ultimate result, I didn't see anyone saying they'ed taken the pre match odds for a Katie win whereas we were plunging in big style for her last week vs Coco Gauff.
Pity, but she looks on a decent path again for now.
Not sure how I feel about Katie B's performance today. Kasatskina looked really sharp and better than I was expecting - signs that she will climb up the rankings again I think. Katie B looked a little flat, but part of that was down to Kasatskina constantly pressurising Katie's serve. The fight back in the second, when the match was nearly dead and buried was good, but like others have said, her form looks to be a lot better now, and last week's results should help to get her back up the rankings.
I was gobsmacked to discover that there is some kind of Ladies Plate tournament here for the first round losers (I used to really hate that tournament at Wimbledon, and like most people, could never really see the point of it) - anyway it might give Katie B a chance of some more much needed Grand Slam points and some much needed playing time. Hopefully as Jaggy says, she can be back in the top 200 soon.

Are you thinking of the WTA 250 next week? Katie is not entered into that.

I think it was likening that event, a proper ranking event, to something like a plate event - as players can only play in it if theyve lost first week in the AO...
Not a huge surprise, but still a shame for Katie. Saying on media she put too much pressure on herself when she didn't need to and got in her own head. Very dangerous to come out on court thinking "I should win this", rather than "I can win this" - especially in a Grand Slam!
But hopefully she can stay healthy, everything there for a good 2021 for her.
ANd I see that Errani beat Wang, seeded 30, which annoys me.
Riske the other seed out so far
And Kerber
Pat Cash was coaching Wang and said she hasn't played much of late. She missed the French but that was ages ago.Surprised players don't hit Errani off court with that serve.
