Remember the days when teenagers won Grand Slam singles regularly such as Graf, Seles, Hingis, Sanchez, Austin, etc. Pam Shriver reached a GSfinal at 16 and Kim Clisters played a brilliant French final when she was just 18. Well even though Andreescu and Swiatek won as teenagers, there are not many teenagers making the main draw at the AO.. There are only 7 of which 3 will be 20 by the end May leaving only 4 then. That leaves Osuigwe, Kostyuk and Leylah Fernandez all born in 2002 and Gauff who will be 17 in March.
I thought Olivia Gadecki had a MDWC, and thus, would be making her main draw debut as well, but I see she lost in quals. There are 8 Aussie MDWC's though and that must be the first time in ages that the full 8 have all gone to players from the same country, what with the usual reciprocal agreement between the 3 overseas slams, and Wimbledon usually handing them back. Wang Xiyu (China) originally had the Asian-Pacific MDWC but she withdrew with Covid a couple of weeks ago, and that one must have been re-allocated to a local player.

If you look at British women's performances in the GSlams since Wimbledon 2017, taking out Jo's 3 last 8 performances of 2019, Jo's other performances are only a par with either Harriet or Heather. Both Harriet and Heather have won 3 matches. Whilst Jo has won 4 matches, one was against Heather so 3 against foreign oppostion. I fear basically we have been generally over optimistic about what we hope Jo will achieve,
Is it more that joko normal level is on a par but she is streaky and now and then does go beyond the others?
Streaky is probably it. Jo's 3 GS semi finals have not followed previous success at any of the venues. She reached the semi finals of Australia on her singles debut there in 2016 and has tailed off in the last 3 years. At Wimbledon she had only won 1 match in her first 5 appearances but on her 6th appearance there reached the SF in 2017 when she was probably at her peak as a player. She reached the semi finals of the French in 2019 having won no matches on her first 4 appearances there. Last year went back to the early loss.

Gadecki played in the Gippsland trophy and would have played Jo if she had beaten Bernarda Pera.

Definition of a WTA player is "streaky" . Very few are actually consistent - I would say Halep and Barty and Serena in her prime years are good examples of consistent players. I think I prefer this over the stagnation of the ATP though, although for me it's difficult to keep on top of players in the WTA because it can go so up and down so quickly.

"Streaky" or not, in British terms, Jo took over the number one slot from Heather in October 2015. I think you have to go back to V Wade for a longer reign?

I think Jo Durie in the 1980's had a long run as British number one.
Complaints are justified about lack of coverage of womens tennis. There is no write up today about prospects for the women in the AO in either the Telegraph or the Mail on Sunday. Most of the write-ups are about Andy Murray and his criticism of the LTA and Covid. There is a write-up on Novak Djokovic.
Heather is on court 10 and is scheduled at 2.00 following a mens match starting at midnight our time. Fran is on court 5 and Jo on court 13 both matches scheduled to start 5.15. However both matches are following a mens match, a women's match and another mens match so timings subject to change. How many matches do Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 actually cover?
