Just caught up with Serena v Aryna match. Stunning match, high quality. Impressed with Serena's fitness. Not worth bothering the bookies with a 50p at 8/11 v Simona though
This player can be mentioned because she has a British coach(Andrew Bettles) but Elina Svitolina looks another of the players who seems destined not to reach a GS singles final. She has 15 WTA career titles and 2 Grand Slam semi finals. The player she lost to in the 2012 Wimbledon junior singles final was Eugenie Bouchard. Bouchard has won only 1 WTA career title but in her peak year of 2014 had one GS final and 2 semi finals. Surprisingly her last 4 record is better.
Looking forward to both quarter finals. I always underestimate Hsieh and am surprised when she beats the big name players. It should be Osaka surely though?
Last night's action was much more entertaining than I expected - hoping for a bit of sleep in between tonight's 2 singles matches - I can't call Williams v Halep; I can think of reasons why both can win; what has impressed me most in this tournament is that both have come very close to being knocked out, but have stepped up to their best form, when it matters most. Osaka will gain a serious advantage if she finishes her match early and Williams v Halep is a marathon, which is one thing I do half expect from tonight.
I was looking at Hsieh's Grand Slam record and it is her first ever Grand Slam singles quarter final. Her previous bests were when she previously made the 4th round of the Aussie and the French, both in 2018 - for any player aged over 30, the fact that she has done that aged 35 must be inspirational.
