Week 6 - Australian Open, Melbourne, Australia Hard

Vondrousova limping - a knee injury or maybe her thigh, which is strapped. Hsieh has just broken her at the start of the second and now has the double break. The injury is affecting her movement side to side - looks like it will be all over soon and Vondrousova deserves praise for bravely playing on (she hasn't even called for the trainer).

I was going to say, every time I glance over she looks in agony.

Really hard to call the other one. It's Naomi who has recovered from a 0-2 start this time in set 2, 3-3. Going over so fast though, both generally serving really well, and getting a lot of first serves in. Serena is NB 2am, so if Mugu does take this second set then there could be a bit of a wait.

2 almost mirrored sets. 31 and 33 mins, 0-2 to 6-4 in both sets.

Hsieh 6-4 6-2 - total respect to Vondrousova for battling on and somehow managing to get 2 games; the injury was clearly restricting her massively, and it may be that she was carrying it into the match and it simply got worse as it went on.

We all failed on our predictions - at the first hurdle.

The level has gone up these past few games. Such a clutch service game from Mugu in the 8th game to hold for 5-3*, had 2 MP's at 15-40, but Naomi held. Garbine serving for the match at *5-4, but could be another twist.

There was. Osaka 4-6 6-4 7-5, in just under 2 hours.

Final set was very high quality. Gutted for Garbine losing from 5-3 40-15*, but fair play to Osaka for really raising her level at the very end. There definitely does seem an aura around her where it would seem a genuine surprise if she loses.

First QF locked in, Osaka vs Hsieh.

I'm off to bed, will catch the rest of the matches in the morning.

Bed sounds sensible - luckily I've never been accused of being sensible. Will watch Serena v Sabalenka- get whatever kip is left after they finish and alarm at 8 am for Halep. The joys of caffeine - I think my blood type is pure C.

Enjoy Andy, you're a better man than me.

I really am interested in the Sabalenka-Serena match, so will watch that first when I get up (prob around 8ish). I might have been tempted just to watch Iga-Halep live at 8, and have the delayed Serena match on the laptop simultaneously, but they probably wouldn't go 5 mins without giving the result during the live match.

That was an outstanding match between Osaka and Muguruza, such a shame it was a last 16 match. Might be hard pushed to find a better match. I have to say yet again Ive enjoyed more of the womens matches than the mens.

There does seem to be more entertaining and likeable players on the womens circuit at the top than the mens. Thiem and Medvedev I cant really take to, and well Zverev I dont think I ever will (if anyone follows Ben Rothenburg) on Twitter they will understand that.

Serena against Sabalenka about to start another great battle coming up. This will be close I think just like the last.

Serena wins the first set 6-4 - quality serving from both players, Sabalenka won one game in 58 seconds, which must be close to a record. Never underestimate Serena; she stepped up just when needed.

I really like Sabalenka think shes my new favourite but I really want Serena to win the 24th Slam. The is is another great battle. 5-2 Sabalenka to serve for the second set. Great tennis from both. Serena has hit some fantastic backhand winners but the power and strength of Sabalenka is fascinating to watch.

Serena up a break final set 4-1, wouldnt want to get on Sabalenkas bad side I tell you she certainly slammed her racket off the court in anger there.

4-3 back on serve. This is a top class battle, Serena had it in her hands there a very fortunate return landing in could turn it. I fancy Sabalenka now. Massive game coming up here.

Serena had some clutch moments there under pressure at 4-4 and then breaks to win. Fantastic battle and Serena really is a true champ.
