Week 6 - Australian Open, Melbourne, Australia Hard

If Heather wins her doubles tomorrow then she will have to withdraw from the Melbourne 250 event.

Might she decide to withdraw from the doubles instead?

 Hardly fair on her partner

MUCH prefer the odd numbered days to the even days. Some really intriguing matches to look forward to tomorrow, on both sides. The two on the women's side I'm most looking forward to are Osaka vs Jabeur, and Sabalenka vs Ann Li.

Felt a bit sorry for Kenin today, she was in tears in her post match press conference, and very honest, but that didn't even feel much like an upset. Good effort from Heather, I did think she was going to pull it off at 4-4 in the second, maybe taking her 4th successive tie break of the week, but fair play to Kontaveit who did raise her level. Encouraging week though.

L32 : Leylah Fernandez & Heather Watson (CAN/GBR) CR 380 (230+150) beat (WC) Olivia Gadecki & Belinda Woolc0ck (AUS/AUS) CR 1001 (727+274) by 7-5 6-2
******
L16: Leylah Fernandez & Heather Watson (CAN/GBR) CR 380 (230+150) vs Sharon Fichman & Giuliana Olmos (CAN/MEX) CR 118 (57+61)

Fichman & Olmos have beaten the 5th seeded Chans (TPE) and then Hradecka & Kr Pliskova (CZE) but then Leylah & Heather beat the 10th seeded Stosur & Zhang in R1.

The Andreescu-Kvitova eight of the draw is now wide open.

One of these players will make the QFs

Hsieh
V. Williams
Errani
Cirstea
Vondrousova

It will be Hsieh or Vondrousova for that QF place. Errani let slip a 5-3* lead in the final set vs Hsieh. I sense forum members will manage to get over it.

Anyway, hardly an awful L16 tie and, as I write, the remainder of the bottom half L16 still looks as if it may be ridiculously strong.

One would take Vondrousova to win. She has one Grand Slam singles final.

Thinking through the womens, these courts must favour Serena to an extent with her power and shorter rallies. She and Ash B but also keeping an eye out for Pliskova.

I seem to remember Fichman playing in this country years ago and not being  very popular.

Heather and Leyla did not play well but the Australians made more errors.

From my understanding shes a very popular, likeable girl - quite loud on court. Will be a close third round match!
