I' m not suggesting Jo should be player of the season. That is quite obviously Emma. No contest. But Jo could not get enough votes for June when she won a title. It's Jo' s knees that have done for her. It seems a problem that cannot be treated. . Never mind qualifying for Wimbledon and losing in the 1st round beats winning a WTA tour title on British soil for the first time in 40 years.
Jo was top seed in Nottingham, and could be expected to challenge for the trophy. Yes, winning the trophy was impressive and she was nominated for it.
Katie was only a wild card in Wimbledon qualifying WR280, and beat three higher ranked players to qualify. She lost to Madison Keys WR23 in the main draw. That was an unexpected run, and the voters deemed it worthy of POM.
We all have different criteria for what constitutes POM, personally I tend to vote for someone who, in my opinion, has achieved beyond expectations or in Emmas case, something incredible (and way beyone expectations aswell) and for me Jo didn't. Not sure why I'm justifying my vote to be honest, it's my vote and I get to use it however I want.

Thank you for your understanding of how the PoM process works. Yes, it's to do with the votes of a diverse group of fans of British tennis, each with a mind of their own.
Fair enough, make cases and lobby. I sometimes do for my choice for a month. Though to have any effect it has to be fairly convincing to possible undecideds and what certainly doesn't work for June PoM is arguing it in mid September.
Jo's been so unlucky this season in various ways, most notably of course injury, and I have previously expressed my sympathy. Never this year though was she my choice for PoM.
Really good to know that Jo Konta who won Nottingham, the first British win in a WTA tournament on British soil since 1981 does not qualify. However it's good to know that Tara Moore and Katie Swan qualify for what they have achieved. Jo's win was before Emma's breakthrough. So obviously winning a WTA tournament does not count for Jo but other main tour wins by Cam,Dan and Emma do.
Oasis Wonderwall (1995). Arguably the Gallagher brothers best-known song, but Liam and Noel were beaten to top spot by another duo: Robson And Jerome, with their double A-side I Believe/Up On The Roof. Despite only getting to Number Two, Wonderwall has still sold a huge 1.26 million copies in the UK alone.
How Green Was My Valley beating out Citizen Kane for years the consensus choice for the greatest film ever made to win Best Picture is one of the easiest examples to point to of Oscar getting it wrong. This overlooks two facts: (1) How Green Was My Valley is also pretty great, and (2) the competition was tough that year, which also saw nominations go to Here Comes Mr. Jordan, The Little Foxes, The Maltese Falcon, Sergeant York, and Suspicion, among others.
Ms Konta could b the best player that Britain ever produced, but still never win an Oscar or get to No. 1. That is not a slight, it is a quirk of voting.
This is the list of how players will qualify for the Player of the Season finals in 2021. Very similar to 2020. Main differences are that as there are 11/12 months instead of 8 (likely) then I have counted just Player of Month and RU, not 3rd place (as I did in 2020). I have amended the qualifying rules in other ways also e.g. taken out the ITF Rankings route as irrelevant, and taken out UK Pro League and British Tour routes. Interesting though they are, they clearly don't define a player of the season and anyone doing well in those who has merit will qualify through other means.
Also, as there are more months, I have increased the number of nominations required to be an automatic qualifier from 4 to 6 this season and tournament wins required to 6 also.

So , Ive decided there is room for a wildcard vote in mid December to kick off the player
Of the season vote . Always conscious my stated criteria may miss out someone deserving, Ill hold a wild card vote to determine a place or places (depending on how many qualifiers we already have).
The wildcard vote will include the top few mens and womens singles (5 each) and doubles (2 each) , junior singles (2 each), and wheelchair singles (2 in total from mens, womens, quads and junior boys and girls) not already qualified. That will give us 20 to vote for a wildcard or two from Ill work out the exact number of wildcards once I see how many have qualified and what would be a suitable number to create a nice round, balanced, finals draw.
This way it is highly unlikely we will miss someone deserving out from our year end vote.
So, well done to Flora Johnson, she gets her 6th win of the season and qualifies therefore for the end of year vote, list updated in the first post in this thread
Here is the updated list of nominations over the season - pending outcome of Paul Jubb's final tomorrow - Cam and Joe both moved onto 6 this month, and lead the pack. No one else not already qualified can qualify for player of the season through this route now as no one can make 6 nominations that isnt already assured a place.
