RE: British Player of the Season 2020 - THE FINAL

Hi JonH

Wow! that opened up a can of worms. I've been away from my screen all evening, otherwise I would have responded earlier. But please, please, please be assured that I never ever intended my posting to be a criticism of anyone, not the forum users and especially not your yourself. I really appreciate how much work you've put into it and have enjoyed taking part.

I'm a mathematician by training hence my obsession with stats (I love to watch matches live and follow the stats in real time). Bias has a slightly different meaning in data analysis ie "a skewness in the data against expectation" as opposed to "prejudice" as in common usage. I apologise to everyone, I should have been more careful with my language.

I was merely making the factual observation that gender-wise, the number of votes showed a "skew" towards the male players, Dan, Joe and Liam as opposed to Jo, Heather and Emma. On the assumption WTA and wheelchair fans are in the minority in the forum, which is not unreasonable, I was simply putting forward the idea that the three / four tours might be voted on separately, in some fashion, to give voters the chance to vote on the tours that most interest them, without having voting conflicts.

I'm probably taking it too seriously, being mathematical again! Anyway, I hope we can be friends going forward and sincerely apologise for upsetting you.

TTMan

 Hey TTMan

The note is appreciated and given an hour or two to calm down a little (and not reading notes impacted by pressures of work) it is all fine.

Lets let it be and move on - I am sure in a moments  reflection there are things to improve on with the whole voting process, etc but the key thing is we all keep it fun.

The final itself is probably a done deal although I have left it open til tomorrow evening - I suspect it wont impact the result and should learn from the past  when, typically, nothing happens beyond a 24 hour poll!

Anyway, having said the timescales, I will keep to them.

Meantime all good and no harm done that cant be easily resolved and put to one side.

Cheers

Just some stats I have done and I am interested in thoughts. Forgive the alignment. At the start of the event, we had 18 men and 14 women, So if that had been aligned through the event, we could have expected votes to be 18/32 to 14/32 as a proportion overall. Is that reasonable? We have had 447 votes IF we include late votes - and I didnt take a record of on time votes so 447 is slightly inflated for those who voted beyond the actual designated cut off time. But suspect that is a stat that doesnt in fact really matter.

The table below shows the votes by group, for men and women. Overall it shows men have received 258 to 189 votes out of 447. So 57.72% of the total votes. IF men had received votes throughout the event at 18/32nds ie 56.25% of the vote, men would have 251.4375 votes ie around 6.56 votes less than they have had.

I am not a statistician but is this significant ie a vote increase from 251.4 to 258 out of 447 in total? And is the approach solid or flawed below?

This is not to propulgate the dispute we have had but a genuine attempt to understand the numbers?

From a wheelchair perspective, we have had 4 out of 32 participants. ie 12.5% of the field. Wheelchair players have received 38 votes in total out of 447 placed, so down at 8 % ish overall and a long way behind the overall expectation of 12.5%. this probably represents a lack of insight and relative valuation of the wheelchair tour compared to mainstream. I havent tried to assess juniors!

Group Votes Men Women Expected Men Expected women
A 32 24 8
B 31 6 25
C 31 26 5
D 31 30 1
E 28 12 16
F 29 2 27
G 32 7 25
H 29 21 8
W 30 23 7
X 29 20 9
Y 30 18 12
Z 28 6 22
SF1 31 19 12
SF2 31 23 8
F 25 21 4

Total 447 258 189 251.4375 195.5625
Average 29.8 0.577181208 0.422818792 0.5625 0.4375

Jon, appreciated, but I honestly think that there is really quite limited true conclusions thst can be come to by comparing proportions of men's and women's votes when we are not talking random tennis automatons but individual players with varying histories and varying tennis disciplines. Other than, as they do show, no startling gender divergence in overall votes. Indeed no overall statistical significant difference  ( 258 vs 251.4 ) if gender 'equa!ity' in proportion of overall votes had been an expectation. Though with many other variable factors, that expectation is debatable.

At least though it is of interest to have an overall look as I said I did when I went back and looked at the votes received from the start of R1. I just looked at each set of figures, without attempting any appropriate or more likely inappropriate ( given it is such a mushy unrandom selection ) statistical test and I was certainly not struck by any general gender bias/skewness.

It looks though as if we have bern trying to look at a more overall picture than TTMan in trying to see where he is coming from. To quote from his last post :
"I was merely making the factual observation that gender-wise the number of votes showed a "skew" towards male players, Dan, Joe and Liam, as opposed to Jo, Heather and Emma."

Yes, 3 particular male and 3 particular female players - I earlier suggested an element of selection but I didn't realise that his basis was so narrowly selective, including one player who, rightly or wtongly, he already very clearly felt didn't get her due, and excluding the woman finalist. I was personally surprised at Liam's early votes ( decent year though he had ) though he fell away in the SF, whereas Joe and Dan to my mind had more substantial tennis claims, with more previously personal unprecedented achievement than the women mentioned. Votes being much more does not necessarily mean that they are skewed, unless a rough equality of votes is a reasonable expectation, and again it bears repeating that they all have their individual characteristics beyond being male or female.

Anyway, anyone want to play a game of selecting 3 particular men and 3 particular women's votes and see if you can make it look biased towards females?!

I still maintain that there appears no very obvious ( possibly little at all ) gender biasedness/skewness from looking at the generality and to try any more complex analysis is fraught with danger of conflicting often unintentional other skews making any results/conclusions highly debatable.

Certainly looking like Joe has this in the bag. But keep voting!

I admit to a personal clear leaning towards the achievements of singles players, and so it was Dan from Fran for me. I have though often enjoyed top level doubles and follow the higher ranked British doublers' results and rankings. And Joe certainly has done superbly well.

I seem to recall that this all started back in March with some favourite British players polls taking place ; perhaps British active tennis board 2021 version of that is on the cards for 2021 March time?!

on a serious note, many of the polls we did are probably pointless repeating , but the favourite British and world players ones are ones that felt they might have merit in an annual repeat. Will be amazing to think 12 months will have gone by!

oh, yes, definitely and that is what I was trying to demonstrate, that the stats dont support any biased ness that I can see or demonstrate !

26 votes placed. I said we would close this at 8 pm this evening and so we will, leaving 12 hours left. If we can get a few more votes to reach 30 or so, that would be great so please still vote.

joe, however, has 15 of the 26 so hard to see he will be caught, but 2nd place is certainly up for grabs

and Alfie still standing as well.

8 hours left so you never know, 2nd could still go anywhere, first place tied up though. Good to see 30 votes reached. 32 is tops so would be good to beat that for the final, with 8 hours to vote it could be possible to get 3 more votes.

closes at 8pm.

Look guys, I'm happy to put a line under this now, please and accept defeat. It was just a suggestion, right but I do appreciate that you have taken it seriously enough to analyse the whole vote. I admit I was focusing in on the results of the key (in my subjective opinion) ATP and WTA players and should have included Fran in my potential next-gens.

I strongly believe the sport would benefit from an ATP/WTA merger, WTA in particular. But the dominance of the men's game in tournaments, the public eye and media is a real hurdle. I'm a relatively recent convert to the WTA tour thanks entirely to Jo, having previously been a big fan of Andy, Tim and Jeremy (Bates). I find both tours equally entertaining and I still take every opportunity to watch ALL Brits on both tours where I can but not enough wheelchair I admit.

As for Jo, unless you are a fulltime fan and there are relatively few of us, you probably don't appreciate how unfairly she is treated by the British media and what affect this has on her, her performance and her public perception. The abuse she and her surname gets on social media and online media reader comments and is a national disgrace. Heather too. I would go so far as to say Jo is one of the least appreciated by her home nation of all national number ones and is much more respected by the WTA, WTA players and foreign media. I have no issue with her personality, I find her intelligent, cheerful, polite, always humble towards her opponents and particularly good with kids (and dogs!!). The fact she has been voted on to the WTA Players Council for several years must say something as is the continued support from her sponsors. Her ranking history and Team GB contribution is second only to Andy's.

Happy to agree! But if youre going to admit to being a Jeremy bates fan, youre opening up a whole new can of worms!

just kidding! One of my favourite bates matches was live on the old court one when he played Thierry Champion in a great 5 setter, also his last 16 versus Guy Forget, and i remember seeing him versus Bergstrom one year and in Davis Cup with Bouncy at Bristol versus Finland. So lots of time for Bates the player.

Yes  as a player Jeremy is  also a Grand Slam champion winning mixed doubles titles with Jo Durie.
