British Player of the Season 2020 - THE FINAL

All the finalists have had a good year and would be worthy winners but am sticking yet again with Joe as I have all along.

JonH - please dont feel p*****d off. You have done a brilliant job with all the polls this year and I thank you personally for helping to keep us all entertained.

I dont believe there is an issue with gender bias on this forum. Some people like both mens and womens tennis, others have a tendency to prefer one or the other (in the same way there can be those who favour singles against doubles). Therefore peoples knowledge and expertise may differ between the tours (in fact I think there was some commentary on here that some of the womens focussed polls got more votes than the mens ones earlier in the year) and that may drive people to vote the way they do.

Looking forward to seeing who wins later. Are we zoom calling in for the awards ceremony?!!!

Hey all, it's just a bit of fun isn't it? I could have made a case for voting for most of the players for some reason. It's not something you can decide scientifically/factually - more of a gut reaction. If I thought it was very important, I wouldn't have voted, as I couldn't really have decided between numerous worthy winners! Just because we don't vote for one particular player doesn't mean we have something against them!
Thanks Jon - hard work appreciated!

And Im sorry I got annoyed. I just feel this isnt all about Jo. The votes are what they are and, as Brittak says, we had earlier polls where womens players got significantly more votes.

Thanks guys for the support, and thanks for voting.

Jon, voter bias can never be shown from just one year's data.

You can't factor out the absolute results - just because people didn't vote for Jo doesn't mean she was cheated.

I haven't voted for Joe because I don't watch doubles (or hardly ever)

I haven't voted for Alfie etc because I don't watch wheelchair tennis.

That's two 'biases' (because I've already said I tend to vote for the person I've most enjoyed watching or following, not some analysis of who actually has done 'best')

But it's not gender bias.

People have tons of reasons why they vote for who they do. Along the way, I've voted for Hep, and Jo, and Fran. As well as Dan and Liam ....
Who at the end? I went for Dan and Fran. No real reason. But certainly nothing to do with gender.

So, put it up, let people vote how they want, you've done an amazing job, and people have really enjoyed it (and those who haven't don't have to participate or click on these pages)

Another one for hey Jon, don't let one poster get you down. I like the polls!

Whilst I do agree with the strongest Jo supporters on here a fair bit of the time, screaming bias at everything isn't helpful or true.

Anyway, I voted for Joe S here. Close between him and Alfie when I cast my vote.

I have no doubt that when NOMINATING, I have tended to go towards people I like and who I follow more closely. But when voting, and most particularly in this Player of the Year, I tended to vote very much off the short summaries that Jon put up for each player. It would be completely honest of me to state that in the last couple of months, I have at times voted for players I had never heard of, until their names appeared on the short list - Hep being the most obvious example.

Perhaps there is a subconscious tendency to vote for "favourites" as opposed to who has performed the best, but in the same way, there may well be a similar subconscious tendency to not understand why others haven't voted the same way as each of us and to perceive this as "bias".

I haven't seen any bias and I do think we have a very good spread across the four finalists in terms of men/women, singles/doubles. There will always be cases where people might disagree with the final selection, but as Jan so eloquently put it, "it's just a bit of fun".

Jon - others have said pretty much how all of us feel about your efforts over the course of the year with regard to these competitions. So rather then repeat them all again, let me just say that I "second" all the plaudits and thanks that have deservedly come your way.

Thanks everyone and I really wasnt looking for plaudits but Ill take them anyway.

Anyway, Im too busy sorting out a strategy to sort the perceived issues for next year!

All good.

Joe leads now and is growing comfortable, come on the rest

Actually, Jo never was my top choice, it's the other Joe. So at least I don't have to vote against her but Jo not being in the final is a bit... well anyway!

jonH wont find a solution for next time.

to be frank im royally pissed off.

end of.

Please don't be upset Jon.  We all think you've done a brilliant job and no need to change anything for next time.  I'm a huge supporter of the women's game and tend to follow the British girls more than the men other than at the very top level.  I'm a big fan of Jo's too and agree she's a really good role model but quite honestly in terms of tennis I think she has underperformed this year and done nothing which would justify her making the final.  I hope the change of coach will reap rich rewards next year. Meanwhile I think we have ended up with the right 4 finalists - now I just have to decide who to vote for.

My final 2 were Dan and Fran, Dan because he would be edging top 20 but for the current situation 're points not dropping off from players above him and Fran for her rise in the rankings. Both have had their personal issues, mentally for one, physically for the other but I love Dan's game so he got my vote.

Fully agree ST. I follow the women's tour more, and Jo was never on my radar for this.

Don't get your knickers in a twist, this is your baby and I don't think you could gave been fairer. At the end of the day it's down to individuals how they vote. If Harriet makes top 100 next year I can't see myself voting for anyone else, if it's top 50 then I won't even have to bother considering anyone else

Thats a thing about this board, there is a large element of interest in the womens game at the middle tier , sub 100 , 200 and below for some folks. The people who follow the men are perhaps focused more on the top guys? Players like jo and heather get caught in the gap a little perhaps ?
