Kind of like football friendlies aren't they - and probably useful as such. But sport needs real point and jeopardy to pull me in.
Yeah, I know what you mean. It'll be very nice to have something to watch in the coming days, especially as I'll (hopefully) mainly just be doing pre-Xmas admin type stuff at work, and there's some nice looking match ups, but today (well, Sunday anyway) you had a few tasty PL matches, a fairly big boxing bout in the early hours to catch up on, and, being a darts fan, the pinnacle tournament of that particular 'sport', so the tennis was more on in the background, despite it being my favourite out of those sports, mainly because the outcomes mattered more in those other events.

Personally, I'd look at it more as three groups of players, comparing the results of Lissey, Eden, Naomi, Beth and Freya against each other. Heather, Emma and Jodie should in theory beat all the others - Fran, Katy (and Katie) ought to be in between the other two groups. Mind you, I haven't looked at the remainder of the matches yet, to see how they line up for the last two days.
Yes but... its just one group in reality with the highest scorer winning overall. So whilst they may be organised into 3 groups , its the player who does best overall that will win. As such, after day one, Beth v Naomi is the only 2 point v 1 point match up so hence my comment...
Heather, Emma and Beth all on 4 points after 2 days play
Would be interesting if all players had the same number of matches to play. Thanks, however, to the LTA's masterly organisational skills Beth has no more matches to play!
I really hate having to defend the LTA twice in a week but the fact Beth has no more matches to play isn't really down to them.
It seems to me that we effectively have a bunch of alternates in the lower ranked who are playing the days the higher ranked girls didn't want to play, or couldn't. The LTA then matched those players up to ensure competitive matches across the event.
So we had Freya yesterday until Jodie arrived today. Beth played for 2 days until Fran starts competing tomorrow, and so on.
So if you look at it we actually have the right numbers to make up a proper league if from the start the top girls had been available for the whole event. But it would have meant fewer getting some matches in, and Beth wouldn't have been involved at all.

Sorry but I disagree with you Paul. No meaningful league competition (which is how this farrago is described) has some competitors playing once and others four times. Giving players more points for beating higher ranked players is similarly unfair. There are 30 women's matches to play with a total of 10 women taking part. What possible justification can there be for not giving ALL players three matches to play? As it stands it would appear that Heather has been told that she can turn up and the organisers will make every effort to ensure that she is virtually guaranteed first place prize money. This despite the fact that Heather is the player least likely to need it. Just to help Heather a little more she gets to play Fran (the only other top 250 player) and a chance to get an extra point. A chance which is not given to Emma. Sorry but it's a total disgrace and all too typical of how the non-stars are treated by the LTA!

What possible justification can there be for not giving ALL players three matches to play? The eleventh ranked player could then play as a reserve if necessary. Alternatively if there was a need for some players to have four matches then just their best three results could count. 15 mens and 15 womens matches... its a total of 8 on the first 3 days each, 6 on day 4, so 30 in total. But still bizarre and makes little sense other than as a set of individual match ups ie up market training block
Main Court from 10am Jones vs Burrage Evans vs L Broady Murray vs Norrie Watson vs Raducanu
Other court from 10am Silva vs N Broady Draper vs Clarke (assuming he's still playing) Ward vs Choinski Barnett vs Dunne
I think I'll largely be sticking with the main court tomorrow. First time they've had 2 women's / 2 men's matches on at the same time.
Heather v Emma could be the title decider as both lead the table and Beth isnt playing. Winner could take all (whatever all is and whether it means anything is another thing all together!)
In mens, Liam v Dan could be important in that overall points race also
