Week 49 - ITF (W100+H) Dubai, UAE Hard

Q1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 508 (CH=240 2011) v GOLUBIC, Viktorija (SUI) 3 137 (CH=51 2017)

They have met twice before with Emily winning in 2015 and her opponent winning in 2013.

Country now corrected to UAE.

Anyone know why Jodie isn't in the draw? She definitely posted photos in Dubai.

TA and AV were speculating on another thread that she has a MDWC

Raina, Gorgodze, Galfi, Konjuh and Burrage were on the qualifying list, but not in the draw. As Jodie is in Dubai (and practising with Heather) it is all but certain she has a MDWC, and it is possible that three of the others do as well.

I'm not familiar with the first 3 but nice for Konjuh to get a MDWC (if that's what has happened).

Gorgodze is in the Q draw, 16th seed, but the other 4 look fairly likely candidates to fill the 4 spots. Galfi has had one the last couple of years, so probably has links, and Konjuh will generally get her share. There was a couple further down the list not in the Q draw, like the #25 and an Israeli who would have been in the top 27 but may have decided not to come due to uncertainly. I'd be pretty shocked if Jodie wasn't in the main draw when it's released.

Edit - Galfi and Konjuh are both currently in Dubai as well, so those two and Jodie look very likely.

I know this sounds really picky. Isnt it UAE and not UAR? Ive never seen UAR before, its a kingdom not a republic?

Sorry if Im wrong and I know its a small thing, but it was bothering me!

Egypt used to be known as the UAR until 1971...

Gabi Taylor seems to be in Dubai as well, not sure if it's just coincidence or if she'll be at the tournament in some capacity.

(3)Heather Watson (GBR) v Q
Kirsten Flipkens (BEL) v Stefanie Voegele (SUI)
Q v Varvara Gracheva (RUS)
(5)Katerina Siniakova (CZE) v (wc)Ankita Raina (IND)

(6)Barbora Krejcikova (CZE) v Q
(wc)Dalma Galfi (HUN) v Q
Q v Jasmine Paolini (ITA)
(4)Anna Blinkova (RUS) v Sorana Cirstea (ROU)

(7)Arantxa Rus (NED) v (wc)Ana Konjuh (CRO)
Timea Babos (HUN) v Xiyu Wang (CHN)

This would be a GREAT time for Jodie to get her first WTA win.

That person on TF is still thinking Giorgi won't play. Coincidentally, Kovinic would actually be the next seed, so if Camila did end up withdrawing, Kovinic would become the final seed, so the draw wouldn't potentially need rejigging, and winner of Jodie's match will play Kovinic/Giorgi/Q/LL in R2.

Still just an ITF event FW, despite being stronger than some WTA internationals (or 250's as they are now), but yes, hopefully a win as the points are significant.
