Week 48 - ITF (W100+H) Dubai, UAE Hard

First set gone in Jodie's match, she was 2-0 *40-15 up early on, but ended up 4-6.

Disappointing, 4-6 2-5*. Kerkhove has won 8 of the last 10 games.

Lost 4-6 2-6.

It's just one event, and she can go home and work on a few things and prepare for 2021 etc. but that's a huge opportunity missed, and looks a pretty feeble effort too. A random MDWC in a relatively big event, and the (slight) pre match favourite (wouldn't be against the vast majority of the draw) against a LL who was 2-8 in her last 10 against top 300 players. This was also their 14th tournament of the year, so a reasonably full schedule, despite the obvious, and Jodie was higher ranked in the 2020 race.

Maybe I'm being harsh, and one defeat against an experienced top 200 player doesn't seem too bad, but to me, it definitely does feel the type of match you'd like her to be winning if she is going to push towards the top 150or so. I guess losing 9 of the last 11 games makes it seem worse.

That is a shame, Jodie falls into the category of players who seemed to do well in Brits only events during the summer but doesnt seem to have taken things on since the Global Tours started again, or maybe I am wrong in that?

Well she beat Johanna Konta in straight sets  in the Brits only events and you can get carried away with that result.

It's been pretty mixed. She reached a W25 final in her first event back (as the top seed), but didn't really face anyone of note until the final, where she was well beaten by the previously much higher ranked (top 60) Haddad Maia. A couple of disappointing defeats against lower ranked players followed, but then a very encouraging showing in Cherbourg where she beat 2 150 players to reach the SF and took Kanepi (who's still a threat in grand slams) to a TB. Decent showing against a circa top 100 player at WTA Linz quals, losing a decider, where she was up a break. Today, a current 260 odd player losing to a 180 odd player (even if the current ranking system is a bit flawed), seems fairly expected, but a bit disappointing when you dive further into it, and just the fact that opportunities like this (outside of the grass) don't come around too often.

Forgot about Heather while typing that out, and missed the start, ha, but she's underway with a hold.

Hev 4-0 up and playing nicely, although her opponent really isn't at the races

4-3* second set. Playing nicely so far. Krunic getting increasingly annoyed.

Got tight there. Two weak second serves on her game points were punished and drifts a drop shot wide

4-5*

Breaks back, saves break points and eventually escapes

6-5*

Needs to stay aggressive. You can feel the lack of wins tightening her up at points and it gives Krunic too much time and space on the ball. Krunic still has those lovely natural flowing strokes but she's prone to wild errors

Double fault puts Heather up *5-2, but she serves one of her own. Recovers with a biggie and a nice put away to go 6-3 up and Krunic nets a forehand

6-0 7-6(3)

Tougher work at the end than it needed to be but great to see her get a win.

Yes, that was a nice win, held her nerve when she had a couple of anxious moments in the second set, never panicked, distributed the ball very well, played a solid tie-break.

As you say, PaulM, great to see her get a win, and in pretty comfortable fashion, playing decent tennis too.
