Good win,  these are the kind matches one would expect Emily to win given she was one of GB decent juniors a few years with a JCH higher than her opponent's 58 at one point if I'm not mistaken. I seem to recall her and Jodie been offered American Uni scholarships a few years back. COVID hasn't really helped in terms of competing in tournaments in 2020 so hopefully Emily can push on from now and get back to where she used to be and start competing at the 25k events in 2021.

The thing is though, Emily's record in W25 main draws is absolutely shocking for a former reasonable junior, so I guess that's why 'losable' matches like this (even if just at W15) seem better than they really should be. From 17 and a half in 2017 to the start of the pandemic, she was something like 2-28 in W25 main draws, that's a manual count of her record:

http://www.tennisabstract.com/cgi-bin/wplayer-classic.cgi?p=EmilyAppleton&f=ACareerqq

so might not be 100% accurate, but it was pretty bad. One of those 2 wins was against British Tour player Andre L as well, so not exactly a scalp, nor a traditional W25 player.

Despite that, she is often the betting favourite in a lot of her matches (inc the defeats), including today, so there must be something about her to influence that, and she did get a couple of decent wins during the summer exho's, and a rare W25 main draw win last month, so maybe she can push on next on year, but at this stage, I think it is quite hard to get excited about her prospects until she shows a bit more.

Ace, I saw that win over Andre L at Chiswick in August 2019 - it was very nervy indeed. I don't think the large coaching contingent watching helped though. She may yet prove me wrong as she is only 21, but at the moment I think she has reached her level.

Just to join in, I was one of those who thought (from the livestreams) that she seemed to be playing a lot better this summer.

And she made quite a big deal out of the fact that she's into meditation now and thinks it's helped her greatly.

(Especially if she's got the world and his wife in her team, stressing her out)

But, yes, I thought her turning down her US scholarship was an error at the time (unlike Jodie, maybe, although still debatable). And still do now (she's a girl with excellent grades). There's no real upward path discernible - getting into the top 500 is certainly possible but that's not that much, in itself. Is the Sky monkey off her back now? Maybe that'll help.....

Difficult to say. She had a couple of wins at W25 R1 before she got injured. If she could get some more it would improve her position and possibly get her inside 500. Fields are ludicrously strong at the minute, but when things quiten down (if ever), she could get to 400-450. Maybe wishful thinking.

It's the 7th seed up next for Emily in the singles tomorrow, who needed 3 sets against a 13/2 shot today:
