5 week Melbourne pocket for tennis season

Not surprisingly ....

Andy Murray will not be competing in the Australian Open:

"Gutted to share that I wont be flying out to Australia to compete at the Australian Open. Weve been in constant dialogue with Tennis Australia to try and find a solution [...] but we couldnt make it work."

The proper outcome, it's a far from ideal situation for the players who arrived without delays and positive tests. Best to sit this mess out Andy so we can see you playing well and in good health soon.

Heather metro.co.uk/2021/01/22/dancing-at-2am-tiktok-triathlons-heather-watson-on-australian-open-quarantine-13945847/ Good point about the sleeping issues with no fresh air and also about the bubble they had at Abu Dhabi that was compromised by allowing Andreescu and her coach on the place ( Heather doesn't mention Andreescu, thats my opinion but it was really not fair to put them on the plane.)

Yastramska told she cant play as well, she can appeal her appeal but she is effectively kicked out and wont be allowed on the grounds.

She will need to return home without leaving the hotel. She should also pay her flight and hotel and food costs. Stupid , narcissistic person.

And from a GB perspective, Katie Swan missed out as first alt for quals.

If Yastremka had stayed elsewhere, had a positive appeal then she would've bee able to play the post AO tournaments at least....

Duly amended. Sometimes I just don't know what predictive text is thinking!

Something else for Djokovic to comment on ? - winners prize money cut to A$2.75m (roughly £1,5m) from last years A$4.12 million (approximately £2.2m)

But first round losers get a bonus - A$100,000 (£56,000) up 11% on last year.

I think this approach is largely in line with other slams during Covid, ie cutting at the top and increasing at the bottom end

For those who are interested, the Australians are running two Wheelchair warm up events at melbourne park ahead of the AO. The prizemoney is ok for 8 players the field, men and women, and should have all the main players before the AO which is also 8 players singles. Should see most of our main players in action, specifically Alfie H, Gordon Reid and Jordanne Whiley. Not sure if Lucy Shuker is playing anymore, she is still ranked top 8 though.

I have only just seen this news.  A good move all round I would have thought?  Exceptional circumstances this year and the Djokovic's wouldn't have a tournament is the 1st round losers hadn't gone through all this to turn up.

WTA draws are out for the two main events in Melbourne.
Jo is seeded 5 and gets a bye.
Katie will play Anna Kalinskaya

Here are the draws:

Gippsland Trophy - Fran has Podoroska; no one in doubles in this event

https://www.wtatennis.com/tournament/2026/melbourne-500/2021/draws

As mentioned above, Jo and Katie are in the Yarra Valley event

https://www.wtatennis.com/tournament/2029/melbourne-500/2021/draws

Again no one in doubles.

The mens draws are tomorrow for the two ATP250 events; the womens draw that Heather is in is on Sunday I believe as it is a 28 draw event and starts later
