Week 46 - ITF (W25) Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain Clay

It's obviously not her surface, and today's match against the good 17 year old was almost 50/50 at the bookies, so no real shame losing this match, but not winning that title at W15 level the other week, retirements/withdrawals, and now losing in W25 quals, it does seem like it could be a long way back for her to get anywhere near where she was. I assume she'll be sticking around the area for the W15 next week.

Hopefully she uses her PR wisely next year.

Yes, she's on the list for next week- but at M13 this time.

At least Katie B is playing again; the fact that she did win a match and is in next week's tournament is a good sign I think - she clearly needs to build up a head of steam and play again regularly - gaining points from tournaments where she uses her PR is going to be vital to effectively relaunch her career next year and it looks as if she still needs time to be match fit and as sharp as she once was.

Due to the injuries and Covid, I feel like she is the British player most under pressure - when she was in the top 100, she looked as if she was going to be the next superstar, but injuries and Covid mean that she has completely lost her way and with her low current ranking it feels as if she almost starting from scratch.

If she can get regular matches under her belt, then hopefully when she does use her PR, she can get some wins and fast track up the rankings again. She will be under so much pressure though, as if she fails to win matches using her PR, she will be marooned way outside the top 100. At the moment, her results suggest she is way off that standard. An absolutely vital period in her career awaits I think.

Does her PR still apply? It's now over a year since her return from her back injury. Or were they frozen as well?

With Amanda, I'll assume there were a fair few breaks throughout, but it was *3-4 the last I saw, so obviously must have broken and served it out.

Shame, but I guess Parry's streak had to end at some point, and there probably wouldn't have been too many of the 8 that Amanda would have won.

Down to just Fran in the singles.

Others on this forum have said that her PR does still apply and it appears that she still has Grand Slams that she can use her PR for. I attempted to find out more on the internet about whether her PR is active and although it isn't easy to gain accurate info, several sources have confirmed that it still is active, and hopefully if the Aussie Open happens in January, she will be using her PR to gain entry there. Covid appears to have lengthened the amount of time that PR is active for, but I think you would have to be a tennis official to know exactly how many events left and for how much time Katie can use her PR for.

I'd love to hear from anyone (again) with better info than me on this and any relevant updates.

Katie and her PR - if she can't win many lower end matches then what's the chances of her winning any at the higher levels? It's a bit like Andy's most recent comeback - he wins a match (maybe) but then can't continue the run

Yes. Katie's PR is meaningless if she's so far off that level. It'll get her a couple of R1 turn-up fees but no more.

Rather like the track and trace system - may sound wonderful in theory, but no good in actual practice if it doesn't correspond to reality.

I agree about Katie's PR being useless if she can't improve, but logically before her back injury she was a fine player and our Number One female prospect, so if she is over the back injury, then once she gets going again, the results should return for her.

I am anxious for her, to see the clock ticking that she is now 24 years old and urgently needs to improve her ranking, but if Covid hadn't happened, the odds are that she would have used her PR regularly and returned to a much higher ranking than her current one. Now it is a case of picking up the pieces, entering several lower ranked events, getting vital match time, and then using the PR when she is showing better form, and then hopefully the most important aspect of her remaining PR allocation is that it ensures her lots of ranking points and hopefully at least gets her back in the top 200 by the time that it runs out.

Katie needs to find fitness and form again. As flamingowings indicates that's the main deal rather than the status of her PR.

Even without a PR, while maybe taking a bit longer, good enough she will climb well up the rankings again. At the moment though there is little evidence that being able to have used a PR regularly would in fact have had her back at a much higher ranking since she looks unlikely to win at higher levels. That's at best going to take time.

I really do hope that she can overcome her medical and physical issues, get in a productive fairly intense close season -- as has been said she does appear far too thin. May 2021 see her on a real comeback trail.
