Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs - GB vs Mexico 16-17th April 2021

GREAT BRITAIN TO HOST PLAY-OFF TIE AGAINST MEXICO

The International Tennis Federation has announced that the Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas Play-off tie between Mexico and Great Britain on 5-6 February 2021 will now be hosted by Great Britain.

The Billie Jean King Cup Committee voted in favour of reversing the choice of ground due to delays to the organisation of the tie resulting from the ongoing Presidential election process within the Federación Mexicana de Tenis (FMT).

With additional operational challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Committee has taken this decision to ensure that the organisers have sufficient time to successfully deliver a safe and secure tie.

The two teams will compete for a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers in 2022. As Great Britain have been granted choice of ground on this occasion, the next meeting between the two nations will take place in Mexico.

The ITF and LTA will make an announcement regarding the venue for the tie in due course.

Billie Jean King Cup Finals Qualifier - GB vs Mexico 5-6 Feb 2021

Good news. Behind closed doors I assume, they might just stick to Roehampton, but it has swung a potentially tricky tie much more in GBs favour.

Very good news indeed. Roehampton makes sense if it is behind closed doors as the facilities are there. Otherwise it could return to The Copper Box, or a similar sized venue. Not long to February though, so closed doors very likely.

And crucially, it looks like GB has retained home advantage as the little C (choice of ground) is still in place. It was always going to be pushed back with the new AO dates, but I wasn't sure if the venue might have reverted back to Mexico as the original hosts, but doesn't look like it. I personally really enjoy this event.

Announced that the BJ King Cup tie  against Mexico  will be held on   15th  to 16th April at the NTC. It is likely to be held behind closed doors. On the BBC tennis website it is captioned -Britain's  home matches in the competition which was known as the Fed Cup  are usually partisan and colourful occasions with packed  arenas.

I think the only year that applied   was in 2019. I think it's a competition  that has passed us by.  Prior to 2019, the last tie played  in GB was the qualifying rounds in 1993 at Nottingham.  It was free to attend for the week but not exactly attended by partisan crowds. There were some famous players there and off the top of my head I can remember Iva Majoli and Larissa Neiland playing. We held the competion final  in 1991 at Nottingham before they had the 2 team final. Before that you had to go back to 1977 when we held the finals at Eastbourne, the week before Wimbledon. The first Fed Cup was held at Queens Club in 1963  Between 1994 and 2018 we had no ties in Britain. When we did get out of  qualifying we couldn't take the next step. I think it's fair to say if we had had a home tie against Sweden in 2012 or Argentinai in  2013 we would have made it with Laura Robson at the helm.

The BJ King Cup finals due to be played in April have been put back to later in the year. But GB's tie with Mexico is still scheduled in April at the NTC centre with no audience.

My go to team right now would have to be, Konta (if available), Watson, Boulter, Jones, Dart, Burrage (< if no Konta). Good to see strength in depth for British women's tennis in the likes of Swan, Raducanu, Bains, Silva, Grey..

TTMan's post in the Jo thread reminded me of this.

The BBC are saying Fri Apr 16th and Sat Apr 17th (not the 15th), so that's 3 weeks on Friday, and Annie K has to name her squad on 6th Apr (a week on Tuesday). The event is the week of the Charleston W250, and just before Stuttgart W500/Istanbul W250. Heather and Harriet are both in Charleston W500 (the week before), but no sign of Heather in the W250 (too early to say with Harriet). Jo is in Stuttgart the week later.

I see Renata Zarazua has qualified for the Miami main draw, beating recent Harriet opponents Sharma and Kuzmova in quallies, although the latter was via retirement with Zarazua 6-3 1-0 up, and she has drawn Hibino in R1 where she is actually the 1/2 (1.50) favourite to win (Katie S was robbed of her POTM the other month, I tell you wink), but it's quite funny how things can go - when the draw was initially made on Feb 11th 2020, Zaruzua was ranked 267 and mainly operating in W25s, and not really looking a threat, but a few weeks later, she made a home W250 SF out of nowhere (the one Heather won), and has pushed on pretty much ever since, and as of Feb 2021, she would have been ranked 74th in terms of points gained in the past 12 month period, and you would think would certainly be a live threat, especially if Jo is unavailable.

Perhaps no surprise but Johanna Konta won't be part of the GB team for the Billie Jean King Cup play-off next month. Says her knee needs time to adjust to playing on clay.

That Zarazua ended up beating Hibino in R1 yesterday, but got absolutely crushed by Kerber today. Still a good tournament from her POV though, beating 3 higher ranked players.

I assume it'll be Heather and Harriet as the main two, injuries / scheduling permitting.

Konta not being there makes the tie more balanced but we really should win.

There will be little comment made if we beat Mexico. However if we fail to beat Mexico then there will be a deluge of comment. Zarazua is their only player who has made any impact on the world tour.

Surely Katie B is still a better player than Harriet, the current rankings notwithstanding?
