Week 44 - ITF (W15) Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt Hard

Anna is probably what I'm most interested in from a British perspective this week.

Qualifiers finally placed and she has a 20 year old Spaniard who is 1-9 in 2020, so perhaps a good chance for Anna's week to continue.

Just about to post the same. 3 breaks each, and the opponent served for it twice.

Obviously less data to work with Anna at up the moment, but looks like it's going to be closer than the bookies had it as they had Anna a big 1/8, 1/9 fave, despite the Spaniards respectable ranking.

It looks a tough test for Anna tomorrow:

www.tennisexplorer.com/player/shymanovich/

Today was Iryna's first match of the season (not sure why), but she had a very good win against Kudermetova's younger sister who's a high ranked junior. She had some solid wins last year at W25 level, a lot of them as the pre match underdog, and she lost to Fran in a W25 SF. Their match is 2nd after 8am UK.

I was just getting more into tennis around late 2016 or so, before that it was basically just the slam main draws, so Anna is basically like a brand new, reasonably young player coming from nowhere for me. I had seen her name mentioned on here a few times over the years, but had never seen her play, or even heard of her when she was last on the scene. It's quite interesting, and I hope she gives it a good go next year, and not just playing a couple of events sporadically.

Anyone have any insight on her intentions?

Don't know Anna's future intentions but I did mention that she beat Vondrousova who was top seed at Junior Wimbledon in 2015. The likes of Judy Murray as a fellow Scot was watching her. What happened in the intervening 5 years ?

Pretty sure Anna was in U SA for awhile. She was injured and seemed to disappear.

Saw her playing when she was much younger in Scotland I thought she was a better prospect than Maia Lumsden.

I thought had Anna had given up playing totally.

Anna's highest world ranking was back in 2015. My attention was drawn back to her because of the Vondrousova win and what the latter subsequently achieved.

Anna came back from 3-4* to take the first set 6-4.

Fell away a bit in the 3rd set, lost 6-4 4-6 1-6. Still a decent week for her, and 5 matches (in 5 days) under her belt.

I looked on the  tennis forum and found a section on Anna within the strawberries and cream GB player forum  entries. Certainly active in the years 2012 and 2015. She was part of the GB  team that  played in the Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy at Eastbourne in 2015. I think the American team included Sofia Kenin. Moving on to 2016 she played in March and then only plays again in June.  Seen at Newlands tennis club September 2016. Then she she reappears on the Aegon tour  in October and November of 2017. We then move onto October 2018 she is in the USA at Tyler Junior College. Next sighting is the present day.

I see Anna's Belarusian conqueror has gone on to make the final here beating the #2 (WTA 309), and #4 (WTA 342), dropping just 6 games (each) in both matches, so although ultimately not enough, Ana getting to 6-4 *3-3 looks even more of a decent effort, particularly in her first proper event back.

Edit - she went on to take the title. Anna was the only one to take a set off her this week.
