A bit of a missed opportunity there for Maia despite being lower ranked (although rankings can be a bit misleading now anyway with the current system). She was the 2/7 (1.29) pre match favourite, and Gerlach hadn't won a tour match since last Nov, before beating her QWC in Q1 yesterday. She hadn't won a set this year, was bageled by Fran the other week, and lost 3-6 0-6 in Cherbourg Qs last week (to the young player Jodie beat in the FQR). Bit of a shame when events are few and far between, and the events that are actually taking place are pretty loaded - there won't be too many more times (in this current era) when she's a betting favourite to win a FQR match. Hopefully she will sneak into Istanbul Qs next week and get another go.
Well done to Fran. I hope she gets a reasonable draw once it is released.
Doubles draw - 6 byes this week, surprised that Maia, Katy and perhaps Jodie (although she probably needs a rest !) didn't enter given the lack of competition.
I was just going to post that the main draw is out as well. Fran has Indy De Vroome first, tough, but she hasn't been in too great form since the restart, albiet a string of tough draws. Harriet has that aforementioned Janicijevic (MDWC) who Jodie beat in the FQR last week.

L16:- Harriet Dart (GBR) / Sarah Beth Grey (GBR) CR408 (195+213) [2] v BYE QF:- Harriet Dart (GBR) / Sarah Beth Grey (GBR) CR408 (195+213) [2] v Justina Mikulskyte (LTU) / Anastasia Zakharova (RUS) CR937 (449+488)
Frankly it amazes me that there is a regular shortfall of doubles entries. Dubs matches provide good practice if nothing else. Also tennis is a lonely sport when you're the only one on a court and doubles also provides an opportunity for many more players to be higher ranked and thus get into big events.

I wouldn't say it is a regular shortfall - most weeks the draws seem to be full (Sharm is this week), or with only one or two byes. But this week and last week in France seem to be exceptional.

I'm just happy that Harriet is doubling up, She really needs to be getting her doubles ranking up to get herself in the slams by right and once there I don't think she would be short of offers to partner.
