Week 42 - ATP 250 - European Open, Antwerp, Belgium (indoor hard)

4 MPs go begging and Humbert takes it into a decider.

Unforced error from Evo on his forehand down the line

Aggressive return attempt by Ugo off second serve that he missed by miles

Excellent service winner by Dan

Nasty backhand slice UE by Evo drifting well long

Ugo clips the top of the net and it falls back on his side

Another super service winner by Dan (again down the middle)

Cheeky coming to the net by Dan doesn't work and he gets passed

This time Dan passes Ugo, clipping the net as he does

Beautiful FH winner down the line from Dan, set up by good serve return

BH winner into the corner by Humbert on Evo's first MP

DF on second one (he was lucky not to DF on the first, in fact - really close)

Real lefty swingy serve by Ugo forces a fault (important point where he got his first serve in, whereas Dan missed both on the two important points before)

Aggressive play with FH down the line quasi-winner from Dan

Went for exactly the same play on the next point (MP) having made the first serve but just, just missed

Dan serves and volleys really well and Ugo produces a stunner pass

And Ugo pummels Dan's backhand, gets the easy ball and wins the TB....

Dan saved 2MPs but couldn't save the third. 4-6 in the decider.

SF:  Ugo Humbert (FRA) WR 38 defeated Daniel Evans WR 35 by 4-6 7-6(7) 6-4  cry

How he'll be ruing those missed match points in the second set.

Dan had his good fortune yesterday.  The match was of a very high standard.

Yes, real disappointment.

At least hes in Vienna next week, versus a qualifier (he wouldn't have feared Kyle, would he!), and up to 32nd now in next weeks rankings. Still, opportunity missed.

I think it's why the choice of next coach is so important, Dan needs to capitalise on his skills in the time he has left at the top of the game.
I'm totally biased, I love Dan's game, I like his ability to read an opponent & get a bit chippy(like his return) at times.

Ditto! Dan's late to the top so I reckon hes a good 3 years left, but next year could be his big one in the game if he really pushes on. This year for all is a lost one really and Dan thrives on crowds, so next year hopefully they'll be back at some stage.

Big fan No.3 here.  I aso think he has a good 3 to 4 years in him and he won't be enjoying no crowds at all, it was the lack of crowds that hampered him when he was younger and then spurned him on in the last few years

 biggrin (sofa)

I'm also a big fan of Dan - try and watch his matches whenever I can and work allows. Been following him ever since I saw him play at Queens on a wild card all those years ago
