Andy and Kyle are in Cologne 2 next week (Andy not defending Antwerp, personally I like players to defend titles, but I guess he got a big deal from Cologne to play both weeks?).

Dan in Antwerp.

Cam in qualies for Antwerp, but in both alts lists.

Luke playing doubles in Antwerp with Withrow. Not sure re other doubles entries next week.

I don't think Kyle defended his Antwerp title either. Just sayin'

Mmm, think you're right. Still dont think it's right, personally I'd make it obligatory, unless injured or other good reasons to defend a title won the year before. Without it, it lessens the narrative imo of the event having meaning as an event, other than just being a stop on tour.

Ken and Dom in Cologne 2 doubles,  Ben Maclachlan also is , playing with Klaasen.  Think we can safely say that he and Luke have gone separate ways.

Jamie and neal and Jonny are in Antwerp doubles.

Joe and Rajeev taking a few weeks out. Presumably aiming at Vienna and Paris and London.

To be fair, as said Andy is in Cologne 1 and, more particularly in covid times, I think best stay where he is.

Also, if he is bothered about his ranking, he wouldn't be able to add any counting points in Antwerp, whereas any points that he earns in Cologne will count.

Not in this case - it has been Andy's only singles title since his last comeback.

Is that the way it works, move event and you can add points. That seems daft!

I'm not having a go at Andy specifically,  I'm a fan of his, but it was a general point I was making.

As I said, I'm an andy fan and making a general point. The tour suffers in my opinion from many events being just a venue with no history to build a story around. Vienna, Basel, and most of the 500 events are fine, the 250 events lack that. One big thing for me is being able to tell a story through their back catalogue,  and players defending, past winners etc are a big part of that.

Not a dig at andy and the fact he won his only event since coming back at Antwerp would make it even a bigger story if he was playing again.

As it happens he is going out first round in Cologne 1 it seems , let's hope he does better next week!

Ps I also believe at Challenger level the events with history are strongest and the ability to tie in a story sells the event. I think the 3 grass court Trophy events benefit from that tie in and are also gaining history. I also feel it at ITF level that the events should sell what they are (the South West England Championships at Barnstaple, an ITF 25 event is much stronger than ITF M25 Week 41 (Barnstaple Indoor Centre) dont you think?
