That backhand return at 4-5* 30-30 really sums Heather up at the moment unfortunately. Ferro visibly shaking with nerves, needs several goes at the ball toss. Eventually lands the second serve and Heather hits a puffball backhand return half way up the net from nowhere, having generally been hitting a clean and tidy ball.

Ferro was getting very tight and at the crunch Heather got very messy. If she could just maintain the pretty decent level she would win matches like this, and the one she lost to Pera a few weeks back.

She clearly needs wins to get the solidity in the closing stages, but where is she going to find them?

Lots of good tennis today, just spoilt at the business ends of each sets sadly when it really mattered

Just look what Mladenovic has done today - after what happened in the US

No-one on God's sweet earth could show less mental strength

 Oh what did Mladenovic do??!

 Was leading 5-1 in the first set, had about 7 SPs (one due to a blatant umpire mistake, but only one)

And then proceeded to collapse, completely and utterly, and lost the first set 7-5 and then the second.

Yes, PaulM. Fiona has only ever won one round at RG - and was such the 'little princess' of French tennis that it was really embarrassing for her. Major pressure. And, as you say, was visibly terribly nervous at the end today.

I see that Harriet's qualifying conquerer, Irina Bara, has beaten (26) Donna Vekic 6-3 6-4 in MD R1.

Re mental strength, annoying as plenty losses by Brits are, I have never been convinced that our players are generally worse in that department than those from other nations.

 Pre injury Katie Boulter had a habit of giving away the 1st set or atleast the 1st few games and then settling down and winning. Harriets pretty strong mentally aswell so I don't think its all Brit women.

I watched the whole of Heather's match and felt she played well but was beaten by a slightly better player. I hoped she was going to win the tie break because I had the feeling that otherwise Ferro was going to win in 2 sets.

If 2020 performances were dispiriting with 6 losers in the singles(male and female) first round,  things were no better as far back as  1991. On that occasion we had 6 women with  direct entry into the singles. Unfortunately they all lost  in the first round with Sam Smith(now commentating) the only one to win a set.
