RE: Weeks 39 & 40 - French Open, Roland-Garros, Paris (clay)

L128:  (16) Stan Wawrinka (SUI) WR 17 defeated (WC) Andy Murray WR 111 by 1, 3 & 2  cry

Lamb to the slaughter.  Very disappointing.  He was never really in it, was he?  Home to Kim & the kids...

Well, this was always going to be tough. I thought it would be more competitive, but if these heavy conditions were to favour anyone, I'd think it would be Stan.

Sad to see really. After the first game he was never in it. A return to hard courts in the coming weeks may help him, but if not you have to question how much longer he will want to put himself through this.

Dan Evans clearly not happy with the tennis balls they are using.

"Some of those balls we were using, you wouldn't give to a dog to chew."

Big credit to David Goffin - and serious concerns about the umpire....

Goffin's ball is sliced, quite slow, takes the outside of the line, Sinner is on the ball, it's called out, Sinner hits the ball back over into Goffin's half.....

Goffin queries the call, umpire looks, overrules, calls it in, and awards the point to Goffin.

Sinner looks completely befuddled - the umpire sticks firm - and Goffin tells the umpire the guy got it back over, it has to be replayed - credit to him.

Especially as then gets broken...

Sinner makes mincemeat of Goffin (11), beating him by 5, 0 & 3 in just under two hours!

Well Sinner proved worth his place on the main stage ( as much of a main stage as it is in the circumstances ), once again showing what a talent he is, here against the WR 13. The Italians are coming   And Murray vs Wawrinka was a very understandable choice. Just a pity these two matches didn't last rather longer and in particular how 'off' Andy was.

In the women's Chatrier matches, at least for the French, Garcia took out Kontaveit in 3 sets after Halep's pretty routine win. And a well known home player against a seed is not unexpected in one main court  match at any of the slams.

In spite of concerns expressed in the Jo Konta thread ( sorry, I hsd lost where it was ) it seemed to me a perfectly reasonable main court line-up for the first of 3 days of R1 matches, if as it turned out not the amount of tennis to be hoped for.

If though they had gone for 5 matches the first 4 might have gone long, causing the last to be played under the roof whatever the weatther ( if they can indeed go late ), and I imagine that the organisers would say the same as Wimbledon do, that it is essentially meant to be an outdoor event ( if not really a September / October outdoor event. So they shouldn't schedule quite likely indoor night matches. If it rains during normal hours, fair enough.

I saw that quote on the BBC website and suspected that was from Dan, he was moaning after the 1st game.

By all accounts, Rafa has been moaning too and he hasn't hit a ball in anger yet.

ITV have just said Liam is on court.
Am seriously hoping they will move from Serena's match to show Liam, but not holding my breath....

Interesting that Vesely made zero attempt to run for the drop shot

Vesely has far more weight of shot than Liam.

But he doesn't move that well, he runs well but he's not sharp of his stance to get going, doesn't change direction very well

Liam is not that far off, despite the score being one-sided....

Not that far off? He won 13 less points in that first set.

With that said, much better start to this second set, being the aggressor and taking time away which frankly he wasn't doing in the first set.
