Boris Becker - criminal charges

The jury went out in the Becker case yesterday and we should presumably expect a verdict today or tomorrow.

Boris has been found guilty of 4 of the 24 charges he faced, he will be bailed pending sentencing in 3 weeks time, 29th April

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61043018

Originally he faced a substantial prison sentence if found guilty of all charges ( 7yrs) but I am not sure what the 4 charges he was convicted of would lead to.

Its a maximum term of 7 years for each count I think Jon. Im not sure whether jailing him would be of much use though. Do you remember when he tried to claim diplomatic immunity from the Dem Republic of the Congo to get out of all this?!

gosh, yes, I had forgotten about that.

Being honest, I have always liked Becker on the whole but , really, he is a quite sad little man, in reality. I feel sorry for him, that he cant manage his life, at all. And he was my tennis hero once as well.

7 years per count - gosh. Would the fact he has a prior conviction in Germany make it more or less likely he would be jailed? And the fact he didnt plead guilty and went through a trial won't count in his favour. I am also not sure what good jailing him would do, but he is high profile and they like to make examples - I am going to guess he will get 2 years, out in 8 months. But bigger than that, it will ruin his career and for that I do feel sorry for him, that he was silly enough to let this happen - and if he really is out of money, this will also possibly ruin his life, even more stupid and silly.

I don't believe it was either stupid or silly.

It was calculated and deliberate - he hid his assets, on purpose, for his own financial gain, basically stealing from his creditors.

I do not find him 'sad' or feel at all sorry for him. He effectively stole a large amount of money and then made up a rigmarole (doesn't speak proper English?? didn't know where his trophies were??) and tried to brazen it out (it's really rare for these sort of cases to go to court - nearly everyone reaches a compromise with prosecution as it's so obvious what's gone on).

Maybe its because I have always quite liked the guy - I know, I cant say why - that I felt it was sad. when I say stupid or silly, I mean that he tried to do it - of course he knew what he was doing, but it was sad that he felt he could get away with it, misguided. And sad that he has fallen so far from grace and is a parody really.

but yes, he clearly knew what he was doing, has history and has done some really stupid stuff in his life generally. And that is sad; he clearly though is a con man at heart and probably deserves to go to prison given his past history .

I find it no more sad than any other criminal.

In fact, I find it less sad than most.

Take the majority of people locked up for crimes - lots there with pretty awful backgrounds, failed by our system, as well as their own families (who may well have had similarly awful backgrounds). THAT I find sad.

I see nothing 'sad' about Becker, nothing to feel sorry for him about.

I rather hope he gets your 8 months. I fear less. If the judge gives him two years, suspended, I will not be at all surprised. But I will be upset.

In case you wonder , one was insider dealing and one was expenses fraud. Both had paid the money back before sentencing, both pleaded guilty. Both managed to keep their families and homes together. I realise most cant do that. Both are still friends of mine and I personally forgive them. I realise many wouldnt.

Will he still be commentating for the BBC at Wimbledon this summer and having a column in the Daily Mail telling us who is going to win the French Championships and Wimbledon?

He should have long ago been dropped by the BBC. It's not as if he's even a great commentator.

I wrote to the BBC several years ago, saying that I refused to watch their broadcasts while Boris was part of their team.

They didn't do anything about it .... not that surprisingly smile

But, yep, you can't keep him now, even assuming he's not locked up .....

He's really not very good and has come across as extremely 'eccentric' for some time now.

Jim Courier is one of my favourites

And I'm sure there are tons others if they looked outside the box of Castle, Lloyd, Baker, Becker etc.

Becker was pretty useless and self-centred beyond belief.
