Harriet's first time at Roland Garros too (I'm pretty sure).

Come to think about it, Harriet must have an excellent record in GS qualifying matches.

Played Juniors in 2013, lost in second qualifying round.

Three double faults in one game from Rodinova.....

And two from Sam that cost her the game.

Not as good a match as Harriet v Buz yesterday.

Sam looks a little slow. Rodinova not doing much either.

*1-4

And then the best game of the set, better tennis all round, that Sam just managed to win.

And then a lovely game from Sam, pretty dire one from the Australian, and it's *3-4

And a few lovely backhands down the line give Rod the break back

(Sam has a problem with her forehand, especially the crosscourt - she unwinds and comes up too early, it's bound to cause a fault)

Sam is a set down 3-6

And the first set goes 3-6

Which was perfectly fair.

The unforced errors did for Sam - too many and they really were unforced errors too, most of them, not aggressive shots that she just missed.

OK, CD with the crsytal ball......that was four reasonably standard forehand crosscourts she missed - a perfect time to break - 30-0 up on her opponent's serve - and couldn't even get the ball in court. Talk about frustrating....

Irina Bara up next for Harriet. She made that French W80 final last week so it currently ranked a little higher than Harriet at 142. A second Romanian opponent.

That was a decentish draw but Sam's game just doesn't translate to the clay and she looks so uncomfortable moving about, which I wonder might have contributed to some of the errors if she wasn't getting her footing or positioning right. Second set was a real tussle but always behind.

Over and out 63 76(1)

Probably was her movement and therefore footwork that caused her unforced error count but she dud well accumulating enough points to be there so anything else was always a bonus .

Yes, I agree, she looks rather scared on clay, and definitely a lot of the forehand errors were about her legs (not movement as such but, as you say, anchoring her footing - she was spinning, no anchor point)

But there was also a head thing going on. She played OK, sometimes well, when a little behind. And then when she got the chance to force the issue, she played some of the worst shots ever. And it wasn't just once but at least 5 or 6 times.

She volleyed well in the second set, and her serve was decent enough, a few nice backhands, and a couple of stunner forehands inside out. But the bread and butter shots let her down - the unforced error count in the stats is wrong (IMO) as it didn't count the service returns, and there were a handful of really key ones, not difficult, that she just had to make, and it wasn't like she going for a winner, just tightened up and messed it up.

A shame really because it was a close match and she could quite easily have done better.

I see Bara is a fairly big favourite tomorrow. She's generally 1/3 (1.33), whereas Harriet is more than 2/1 (3.00) pretty much everywhere, 9/4 (3.25) at one bookie. I guess the surface and Bara's efforts last week's will be the main factor there (in determining those odds) as they are of similar age, similar ranking, and similar CH.
