No one can lose points in 2020.
That's the sort of simple thing I can remember !

Just to confuse things, rumour has it that if Djokovics default had happened 1 round later thus equalling his US Open result last year then he would have lost points, not usre how true that is though and it is an exceptional circumstance.

Yes that is true, it was well mentioned at the time (of the DQ).

AFAIK - you either keep last year's points or this year's- whichever is the best/highest.

He retired against Stan in R4 last year, so both R4, so I assume it'll just mean he would have lost those extra points he would have gained had he made the QF this year.

As I understand it, if hed made the qf hed have replaced 2020 for 2019 points but then being disqualified,  hed have lost those 2020 points and got a zero counter in essence. Bm ie hed have lost 2020 and 2019 points. But as he lost in 4th round, the 2020 points didnt take over and this means they didnt count and he couldnt lose them

Cool, thanks Jon. I did think I read something like that at the time, but wasn't sure.

More significant in that case, certainly would ne to most players anyway, although maybe not quite as much to Djokovic, who'll generally get more than 180/360 points in pretty much every event he enters, even if there was a big, gaping 0 in his slam counters.

So if Djoko had gone further before being disqualified he'd have ended up net with less points?! Terrific lol

And just when we'd left CD all content with a simple can't lose previously earned points in 2020 position. Now Djokovic and this interpretation of the rules indicate that maybe you can.

I hope the French Open contestants take note of up to which rounds they can assault officials/ball kids without losing out on previous points.

Being DQ'd is quite rare so just stick to the if they do better in 2020 than in 2019 - they get points. If they do worse in 2020 than in 2019 then they keep last year's points! For 99.9% that will be right!!

Nightmare draw for Jo. Cocchainetto (sorry sure spelling is wrong) has done very well recently, I think jo could struggle there and then Muguruza or Gauff.

Dont see Jo getting past a round here.

Muguruza has get through Sloane Stephens first which is no means easy either - both streaky players at the best of times

 Indeed, tough section.

It might never happen but Sloane is a good match up for Jo. They have met on 4 occasions all in 2019 and Jo has won on every occasion. Once was on hard courts, twice on clay and once on grass. The worst match ups are Svitolina, Strycova and one here  in the same half of the draw in Jabeur. But it could all prove academic. Of course when Jo reached the final here in 2019 she was unseeded.

Just to note - no entries in the doubles this year.

Cocciaretto plays (Q) Begu in R1, so that's a pretty tricky match for her. Clay is also Begu's preferred surface and she came through quals easily (dropping 6 games in 2 matches), and got to the WTA Prague semi final the other week, losing to Halep.

Whoever Jo plays they seem to have recent good form on clay courts. It might not  happen even now  but whilst  Begu has  had a ranking since 2006 and Jo since 2008 they have never met in singles. Begu was voted newcomer of the year in 2011 the year before Laura.

Begu won 6-2 6-2, so a first meeting between her and Jo, as Rosamund points out.

Well Begu has certainly had plenty of practice on clay as Jo will be her ninth match on clay since the restart. She's only dropped 10 games so far in Rome. She beat the likes of Errani and Friedsam in qualifying.

Muguruza beat Stephens 6-3 6-3 and Gauff beat Jabeur 6-4 6-3.

So it will be Konta or Begu vs Muguruza or Gauff in the L16.
