Re qualifying results: Jamie was really unlucky in missing out on a place in the main draw, he should now be almost sure of a place as even if he loses he'll probably get a lucky loser spot. However, if he wins he'll get an extra 2 points for qualifying which will be useful. I'm surprised that Jamie lost a set to Borvanov as the American's form has been pretty poor lately and Mackin beat him 1 and 3 recently. However, I'm not surprised about Brunstrom giving Jamie such a tough match. The Swede has a massive left-handed serve and is a good serve-volleyer - it was a good win for Jamie.
Leonardo Mayer is an 18 year old Argentinian ranked 458. He was the number 2 junior in the world in June 2005. His most recent tournament activity was the Venezuala satellite in March, he reached 3 finals, winning 1. This is Mayer's first tournament for 3 weeks.

Actually I suppose I shouldn't really find it funny.

Robert has been awarded a wildcard which he must have bought. This time last year, Robert bought himself a wildcard into a Challenger in Mexico and lost 0 and 1 to an unranked local coach who had also received a wildcard. I believe that Robert's point from last year's challenger would have expired leaving him unranked which is why he's bought another one. Robert is a decent club player but clearly he's nowhere near good enough for even futures or satellites. This sort of thing makes a farce of the system, the ATP said they were going to do something about it when the Times and the BBC both published articles in May 2005 but they have clearly not done anything.
Mackin has got as good a draw as he could have hoped for. Uebel is ranked lower than him at 308 and his form hasn't been anything special recently. He lost in rd1 of Valencia last week and prior to that he lost in 3 sets to Britain's Andy Kennaugh in a futures event in the United Arab Emirates.
I agree with RJA, if they stopped awarding points for first round defeats in challengers it would stop all this nonsense with players buying wildcards. I think that ATP events should still have points for first round defeats though.
Qualifying rd: J Delgado [GB] [1] bt F Mayer [Arg][5] 7-6[4], 7-5
Excellent win against the former world junior no 2, and Jamie has secured 2 points. Hopefully he'll get a decent draw, will check on who he's up against.
Would it not be more sensible to not award points for Wildcards only who are defeated in the first round of any tournament? It might mess up the Brits' annual rise in the rankings for appearing on the first couple of days of Wimbledon, but that would be balanced by all the other players not getting points for their wildcards in tournaments in their countries (thinks of US open plus three Masters events in the US)
Sadly Jamie hasn't got lucky - he plays 5th seed Dudi Sela in rd1.
Sela is ranked 169, he's reached 2 challenger quarters and 1 semi so far this year. He lost in rd1 of Talahassee two weeks ago and lost in rd2 of Valencia last week so his recent form is similar to Jamie. Sela was rated by tennis experts as one of the brightest young prospects on the challenger circuit, a year ago. He hasn't made the progress expected since then showing how difficult it is to break through from challengers to the ATP tour.
Hopefully, having already won 3 matches here and being fully acclimatised will give Jamie a big advantage.
I think buying of WCs should be banned immediately. I am fiercely loyal to Brit tennis players, but this is just not right. Ill be hoping against hope that Ghem has something bad for lunch though
