Caroline Garcia has just dumped out the top seed Karolina Pliskova 6-1 7-6(2)

So having started out with just 2 of the top 7 ranked in attendance, only Sofia Kenin WR 4 remains.

Serena Williams WR 8 and Naomi Osaka WR 9 round out the top 10 competitors.

But the three names left are all Grand Slam champions which Pliskova wasn't.

As are the missing Barty, Halep and Andreescu.

I watched all of Garcia's match - SO enjoyed it - a little weird, a truly all or nothing approach, but really pleased she won

Re missing players Halep and Barty have not looked like potential US Open champions based on their record there.Halep has not got  beyond the 2nd round in her last three  appearances and Barty has never got beyond the 4th round. Andreescu is a different matter as she always looks like a potential winner when she is not injured which is all too often.

Still those 3 are respectively the WR 1 and 2 and last year's US Open champion and won 3 of last year's 4 Slams. And whatever their US Open records, there is no big reason that Barty for instance couldn't do very well.

It's a very interesting tournament, and beyond the top 10 ranked the attendance is very good. But the fact remains that these 3 are among 6 of the top 10 ranked that are absent and that is clearly of some significance.

Although the womens seeds held up remarkably well in round 2, a fair number fell yesterday (normality resumes) so it probably is anyones to win. Osaka seems to me to be clear favourite now, tennis abstract rate Sabalenka as the 2nd most likely

Maybe they know something we don't know!. There's an all Belarussian 2nd round with Sabalenkav. Azarenka.

Bertens may be in the top 10 but Jo's record in Grand Slams is far better. Same with Bencic. Jo has far more appearances in the quarter finals of Grand Slams than this pair. Even with withdrawals how did Pliskova ever get to be top seed? They may be ranked lower but  I think Serena and Naomi would have been more missed if they had not played and the same for Coco Gauff even if she did lose in  the first round.

They see her as most likely finalist in lower half. Kvitova is actually their 2nd favourite but in top half with Osaka. They have Sabalenka as 70% likely to beat Vika.

Excellent first set. Decent enough second but Cirstea raised her level and served well on the break points at 4-4* and 5-5*.

Thought Jo was coming back in the breaker only for Sorana to scream an ace.

Jo just needs to stay calm and not overpress. No reason to panic, yet, but could do with getting the first serve percentage up.

1-0*

Agree Paul, was going to say something similar. Cirstea really played well in that second set. Can she maintain it ? We'll soon see.
