I remember the first time I heard of Bernarda Pera was when as a qualifier she beat Jo in the 2nd round of the 2018 Australian Open. Something of a bogey for our players.

Heather so much better than last week but she should have found a way through that third set. Twice she broke only to play a poor service game. Pera was serving so big that she couldn't afford to keep handing the initiative back. Some lovely stuff but also too many basic errors and short balls.
Still looking for a pro main draw win on the US Open site!
Not that confident for her to end her bogey next week, but hopefully she can keep playing herself in to better form.
It must be because they haven't played a tournament for ages but the top 2 seeds in the US Open Pliskova and Kenin both lost in the first round. They did not win a set and were not at their best. I wonder if they will be better next week. Talking of not winning sets and one must allow for knee and palpitation issues but against Bouzkova (twice) Jodie and Katie ,Jo has only won 1 full set out of the last 8 she has played. We talk about players being rusty until you look back to 2009 when Kim Clijsters won the US Open. That was only her third tournament of 2009 and she had missed the whole of 2008. She beat both Williams sisters, Wozniacki and Li Na in the process. The main danger might have been Henin but she was retired at the time. No comments about rustiness !
