Sam Murray ( entry ranking 180 ) is also one step closer

Seriously, I wouldn't be amazed if the last entry ranking went right out beyond 180 late on.

But clearly, if not in the US, it is surely not something that you would take any chance on ( debatable enough in say Harriet's 146 position ). So, as I saw previously surmised, there may end up being quite a few fairly lowly ranked locals getting in late on.

See that Sams husband is on the doubles acceptance list so perhaps not beyond the realms of possibility for Sam to play if the cut-off point ends up going that far down

Ooohh, smart thinking.....

Wouldn't it be amazing if Sam got in the main draw of the US Open.... smile

Yes it would be great if Sam could make the main draw as it would boast British numbers up to 3 assuming Harriet does not play. We're still awaiting the arrival of the next generation as Jo and Heather were part of  our quartet who played in the 2012 US Open.

Petkovic out moves Harriet one closer.

And as it takes Kostyuk into the main draw, she has to pull out of Prague, with that spot being taken by Mandy.

Petkovic is on the official list of withdrawals whereas rumour has it that Hercog has withdrawn but is currently not on the list.

Yeah, there was some sort of (foreign language) report about Hercog earlier in the week, and that Morgado journalist included her in his list on non players, but it mustn't be 100% official yet as I thought Kostyuk would have replaced her, and Nara replacing Petkovic, but it's just Kostyuk officially in for the moment.

Kerber has posted that she is playing the USO and is on her way. I think it's just Martic, Muguruza, and Ostapenko of the top 50 who aren't playing Cincy (or not currently in New York) so probably most doubts about their presence. Muguruza is at least practicing on hard and seems just a case of whether she recovers in time, but the other 2 still seem to be chilling in Europe with no hint they'll be playing, other than the fact they are still on the entry list for now.

Obviously injuries can still happen, and, god forbid, that little thing called covid, but good that the raft of withdrawals among the better players seems to have slowed down.

Harriet seems to be practising on clay at the NTC. Agree it seems that the withdrawal flow has stemmed which is a good thing. Draw will be made Thursday and any subsequent withdrawals replaced by on site doubles players.

Personally I think it woud be really poor form to withdraw after the draw unless it really is an injury.

Just saw her 'story', that surely means she intends to play Prague instead of the US Open? If so, hopefully she officially withdraws in time, or she'd be automatically withdrawn from Prague if she makes the US Open main draw, and she's just a few out at the moment.

Martic has posted about a last hit before before New York, so baring any unfortunate, unexpected last minute withdrawals, the top 8 seeds should now be set, and Konta looks set to be seeded #9, and could therefore face the likes of S Williams and Ka Pliskova (and any other 1-8 seed) in the L16, should any of the players mentioned get that far.

I seem to remember Jo beating Ka.Pliskova in the last 16 in 2019 with a performance she has not matched since.

If seeded 9, with the way the seeds are bracketed, the only top 8 seeds Jo could meet in the L16 would be seeds 5, 6, 7 or 8.

She could only face a top 4 seed, such as Ka Pliskova or S Williams from the QF on.

Agree with your comment. In the last 5 Grand Slams number 9 seed would have played  player seeded 5,6,7,7,5  . However none of these  projected matches ever took place. On the first  4 occasions the number 9 seed did not make the last 16.Most recently in the 2020  Aussie Open Bertens as 9th seed did make the last 16 but the 5th seed Svitolina had been beaten by the .unseeded Murguruza. (Amazing being unseeded) She then beat Bertens on  route to the final.Recent history is against Jo  as 9th seed having to worry about a potential 4th round opponent.

Ah yeah, totally forgot about 9-12 playing 5-8, and 13-16 playing 1-4 should the seeds all make the last 16 - it's been that long since a slam smile

The draw will obviously have a big impact, but in general, I'm not really expecting her to match her seeding here, but if all the seeds did, then potential L16 opponents would be Sabalenka, Kvitova, Keys, and Martic.

CSN has withdrawn so Harriet is 4 out. I think it's now cutting quite fine to make the cut, get to NY and perform to a decent level. She may well take the view it's better now to put the time on the clay and go to Prague and get in best shape possible for the European clay swing that seems to be going ahead as planned. We'll see.

It seemed inevitable, but Ostapenko is officially out now. Osuigwe now makes the main draw by ranking, and her WC goes to that 16 year old Katrina Scott who Katie S played in USO qualifying last year. Looks like Peterson will now be seeded as a result.

T Maria looks to still be officially in the draw despite being heavily pregnant, likewise Hercog where there were strong rumours of her not playing - perhaps both plan to remain in the draw and turn up on site to pick up half their prize money, although that would be a bit silly in the formers case if she is pregnant.

Players have until the draw on Thursday to withdraw for a singles alt to get in, as apparently on site highest (singles) ranked doubles entrants get priority once the draw is made.
