Week 33 - ITF (W15) Oeiras, Portugal - Clay

Good stuff

Mandy currently has a 16th counter of 4 points ( actually the highest 16th counter of any British woman ). So she will need to reach the final here ( win=10, RU=6 ) to improve her current 154 points total.

I don't particulalry know Maelys Bougrat (the French qualifier you mention)

I know she's still a junior (born 2002). And is definitely quite rated, one of the FFT top ones. But I've never seen her play, not even on livestream.

I note though that the French federation has bought a whole coachload of their top young hopefuls here.

Parry, Burel, Bougrat, and Salma Djoumbri.

In July, the FFT published its list of top 30 girls for each year of birth.

For the 2002 girls, the top 6 read:

PARRY
DROGUET
JANICIJEVIC
DJOUBRI
MOHR
BOUGRAT

So this event is obviously the FFT's practice event for a group of their youngsters.

Cheers CD, I had heard most of those 7, bar this qualifier and Mohr, some are obviously more well known than others.

I might actually stick that match on in the background later, just for something to have on, since it's easy to get on the big screen via Facebook Watch, and a bit more relevancy since Amanda plays the winner.

Oh and that 'not major' comment was totally down the the odds rather than any knowledge or perception. The underdog in the other match on centre today is like 10/1, so that would likely be a huge surprise.

Yep, no stream for Amanda tomorrow. Tauson, who beat Burel in 3 sets in almost 2 and a half hours, is on one though, as is top seed Bucsa who Amanda would meet in the QF if both won tomorrow.

Yes, got to *4-0 quickly, then four breaks of serve in the next five games. Not that that is unusual with Mandy, her game is rallies and not reliant on serve.

Six more consecutive breaks *3-3

Good stuff, not top opposition, but two wins under her belt and first Brit to get two official wins since lockdown! Our winningest player, as the Americans might say

It likely won't get any easier if she does manage to pull it off tomorrow as the winner is in line to face a promising 17 year old in the SF, most likely Tauson, so it will be tough for her to add any countable points this week by reaching the final, but here's hoping.

As mentioned earlier, Amanda did beat Bucsa 6-4 6-2 in a clay exho SF a few weeks ago, but not sure how much we can take from that. The bookies have it Bucsa 1/2, Amanda 6/4.

Amanda beat Bucsa three times on clay in 2015 and lost once to her on hard in 2019.

All the "Warm-up" tournaments are likely  to be over-subscribed. Sign of the times.

Two long matches have seen the #2 and #4 seeds go out, but they are in the opposite side of the draw to Mandy

Mandy's match to start shortly, some two hours after the NB time of 14:00
