Jo Konta says she experienced heart palpatations early in the match. 4th time its happened, 2nd time in the last 3 months. Heart rate shoots up for no reason. Has had it checked out and generally not concerned, but will get an EKG. #TSOpen

Why does Watson look so unfit. No excuses for that at this stage of her career. And I really like Heather

I thought Heather looked unfit at the BOTB but got away with it there.

Isn't breathing difficulties one of the symptoms of Covid 19?

Turned out to be heart palpitations which Jo had suffered from before on a few occasions. Perhaps the humidity in  Lexington did not help.

No surprise both lost, both came into the event with a lack of match practice.

Certainly true for Jo. Heather played and won five (?) singles matches at BOB, but of course against lower ranked opposition. I thought she looked far less fit this week than she did then, and I hope it was the dress that maked her look a few pounds overweight.

Heather, by her own admission on BBC, put on a bit of weight during the lockdown. Which isn't all that surprising. I agree with you in general re 'no excuses', but it has been a really stressful, difficult time. That doesn't directly equate with fitness, of course, but it doesn't help, especially if it's really recent. And, yes, I know some people have said there was a huge level gap, but I didn't think (overall) she was playing that great at the BOTB either (and I love Hev too).

I genuinely think it is surprising, being honest. As a pro athlete, surely keeping fit was a basic requirement...lockdown wasnt a holiday (although many treated it as such) and for pro athletes, surely they should have kept a decent level of fitness. Everyone could go out running, the hour a day we all had in the early days. I usually like to be supportive, but any of our players who arent fit have (I dont mean injured) have only themselves to look at.

Evo is an example - he looked sharp and fit at the first BotB event, won it. In the 2nd event, he had clearly let himself go, got back a bit of a paunch and looked like he was struggling as a consequence - only himself to blame.

I realise they are young people, but they are professionals and fitness is a core part of being professional, whatever the circumstances

Different people will react different to lockdown even if they are pro athletes. Have you seen this picture of Raonic?

What purpose does linking a picture of Raonic do other than to fat shame?

Diego Schwartzman posted a picture of him and Raonic on Instagram and then closed comments because of people writing exactly that sort of thing (about looking like he had let himself go or being fat or whatever).

In terms of the event, obviously British interest unfortunately ended yesterday, but you've got 2 young, well known, Americans in Anisimova and Bellis meeting in the lowest official WTA tour event level later today, on American soil as well, yet their R1 match can't even get on to Centre Court, so that just shows the amount of star power and name value they have on display here.

Anisimova is still just 18 and still has that RG SF (like Konta) on her record, and although Bellis has had her numerous injury issues, she's managed to beat Bouzkova and Muchova this year in her last 2 events, so is still capable despite unfortunately being much lower down the rankings as she should be, due to the injuries. That's due at 4pm UK - hopefully the weather stays clear.

Edit - and after all that, Anisimova is out, and Bellis now plays a LL.

I think that in normal times your argument holds strong. And usually I am very critical of a lot of our players for lack of fitness. And have no qualms in saying so.

But the pandemic and quarantine period has been a complete gamechanger, a very stressful time, emotionally, financially, with people having worries about their families, their futures, the world in general. And different people deal with stress in different ways.

So absolutely no one is suggesting that Hev or anyone else treated it as a holiday instead of professionally (well, I'm not, that's for sure)

But I don't find it at all surprising if certain people have taken to a little comfort eating, or whatever else people felt they had to do to try and stay sane (within reason). I honestly don't think one can be judgemental about it.

Leaving aside their personal backstories that none of us know, even the ''frontstories' that we're all dealing with is enough to bring tears to your eyes sometimes...... I was talking to a young friend yesterday (only 23) who's lost part of his lung function and is still confined to bed, many weeks after being 'recovered'.

So I have zero criticism of Hev, or Raonic, or anyone who may have slipped from their normal routines. In fact, I have sympathy, given the nasties on social media, because it's almost certainly better than those who've been hitting the bottle, or wracking up e-sport gambling tabs, or just spending mind-numbingly amounts of time on Netflix, or whatever.... I think everyone just has to try and be decent and get through, however they can. Hopefully, next year, when all's back to normal (maybe???), these things can then addressed.

I must say it's really impressive coverage from Amazon here. They've got Greg R and Catherine W in the studio, and all the big hitter commentators like Sam Smith, Annabel Croft, Dani H etc. - it's obviously a strong field, and also had British interest, plus today's centre court could have easily been a US Open Arthur Ashe schedule, but it's brilliant coverage for a WTA international / ATP 250 type event.

Serena through in 3, Gauff also through. Venus and Vika currently in the early stages. Stephens vs young Fernandez after to close the day.

Tara and Emina not unsurprisingly found Mattek-Sands and Stephens tough opponents, going down 6-1 6-4.

Lexington is a beautiful part of the world should you ever get a chance to go.
