Week 31- UK Pro Series - St George's Hill, Weybridge - (Hard) (Series Week 5)

A few to many errors from Emily, and Naomi eventually breaks to take the first set 7-5

Emily gets a double break and serves it out for 6-2. Into the MTB

Yeah, one glaring one at deuce at *5-6. They are really well matched though, a 3rd MTB out of 4 for them, and while it doesn't mean much if the end result is the same, Emily probably has won more games in their meetings.

Let's see if she can take an MTB here, but she has lost more than she has won at SGH, and not the best start here.

1/2 Emily Appleton WR675/147 def Naomi Broady WR499 5-7 6-2 10-8

Well done Emily, great to see her finish the match without any wobbles. Deserved the win today.

By my reckoning that takes Naomi to $19k for the series, and Emily to $17k

Pleased for Emily, and nice to see her take a title after being one of the more prominent players here, especially as Naomi had won their previous final, and the prize money on offer today wasn't too different. So 5 different weekly winners.

I'd quite like to see Holly take this match, but hopefully Eliz comes through it with no issues, and ideally not an extended, gruelling battle.

Getting quite fiesty this one, but that's not unusual in a Holly Staff match. Both not happy with some decisions.

Big hold from Holly who now leads 6-3 3-1*

Saves a BP, then immediately breaks to love, nearly there. *4-1.

2 MPs come and go (one a DF), and now back to back games for Eliz, 6-3 5-3*, and halfway to a third.

5-1 to 5-5*, and another MP saved by Eliz, Holly really does wear her heart on her sleeve.

It's basically turning into what I wasn't wanting, ha, an extended battle, and now the momentum with Eliz.

Holly over the line at the 4th attempt, 6-3 7-5.

That was one of the most gripping matches of the series so far for me. Even that last game, *0-30, and Eliz called the 3rd point out, but the umpire overruled it, which rarely happens here, so huge difference going to 15-30 instead of 0-40, and then Holly won the next 3 points to take the match.

So, that's 2 5th place finishes for Holly in her 2 events here, and the 16 points will move her above Emily Arb into 10th in the overall table, and the first Alt spot (now that it's 9+3). I had suggested Emily Arb as a decent potential WC pick earlier, but it would seem a bit harsh after Holly came through what turned out to be an epic, but was then leapfrogged anyway by the person who she was battling so hard to surpass.

Mind, I did notice earlier in the series, they had Holly down as 8 points for her first event, but had her on 6 in the total column for some reason, so I hope they don't just add 6 and 8 to make 14, and have her behind Emily's 15 points.

I wonder where the cut off for the alternates will be decided. If it was last week , would Emily Arb be 1st alt with the 15 points she's got ?

If it was last week then it would have been Emily on 15, but I genuinely don't see any reason why it would be, as this is a normal qualifying week, and Olivia and Victoria were still in Classic contention yesterday, and had either won the title then Freya would have been pushed out to Alt 1, so it's not as if Emily's position was ever set in stone, and she could plan accordingly.

Both Emily and Holly played 2 events each, and Holly got an extra point.

Only 34 pages so far on the men's event, but up to 60 now on the women's - hence splitting the thread up !

You make a valid point,  this is a qualifying week as well.  We shall see the line up for the Classic Week imminently,  hopefully.

The women's tennis followers do like a chat or two. I could be sexist but I think it's mainly men chatting

Yeah, I wonder if we'll get any official press release / equivalent, or if it'll just be a case of waiting for the OOP to come out later this evening, or relying on anyone ITK on here.
