Eden Silva

I dont believe we have a player thread for Eden, and not an ideal topic to start one on, but this is pretty grim:

Outrageous. I don't tweet but someone should get that to Chris goldsmith, the tennis talker

For me, a tweet like that should be a police matter. It is truly disgusting. Sadly, with the account owner looking as though they are Russian, I am sure nothing will be done.

That name looks familiar - I'm sure I saw them commenting on youtube the other day - I was trying to work out the pronounciation.

One of our girls posted a screenshot briefly on instagram this week - the comments were even worse.

It's not right. However when there is less sport on for people to bet on and the UK Pro series allows the data to go to betting companies it was always likely. I believe the ITF were forced to get rid of data to betting companies by the ATP for allowing ATP points back. Outside of players being given money to throw games etc... The abuse is enough to put off young players.

Actually one of the more sensible things that the ATP have done.

It's utterly appalling. Twitter has to take some responsibility too.

But I don't understand re the betting - surely all betting sites give a refund of the stake when a player retires (as Eden did today). So how can this guy have lost any money? What on earth is his problem?

I'm assuming Eden is referring to her match with Tanysha the other day, as she said even when we win. This chap probably backed her to win that one in straight sets.

Well done to Eden - her singles has been frustrating for fans - so many glimpses of real potential, so many one-off super matches, and so many AWOL follow-up matches, and whole AWOL periods

BUT, as of 30.01.23, she's cracked the top-300 in singles - posting a new CH at WTA 300 exactly

Congrats to Eden (age 27) for a new CH in singles - WTA 299

AND a new CH in doubles - WTA 250

This is one of the things I love about supporting our British players.
Not everybody can be top 10 or even top 100. But always great still to see a player reach a new career high.

Yes, I agree

Especially when it's an 'important' new CH (and I know she got to 300 a few weeks back but properly inside that top-300 (Tara style biggrin) is a little different somehow)

I aslo love the fact that (in my opinion) it's still perfectly possible for Eden (or others) to suddenly have a bit of a run, to have a bit of a déclic (as the the French say for lightbulb moment - you un-click) and to suddenly be 100 places higher. I'm not saying it's necessarily odds-on likely. But JoKo drifted around at 130 or so for ages and suddenly there was a gamechange moment. Eden isn't JoKo but she could still quite easily, with a fair wind, suddenly jump up and have a couple of years as qualifiying for Grand Slam qualis as of right, say, which is a big deal.

Its part of why I think we all love the grass season as well, maybe home events in general. You always feel there is some one that will have a lights out week with the opportunity of playing at home who will take advantage and get a big rankings boost ! Never sure who or where or when it will be but there is that anticipation !
