Naomi Osaka

Well, Naomi may not have been this boards favourit player, but she is the worlds it seems, at least financially. Highest earning aportswoman, overtaking Serena

Hardly surprising. I remember Li Na being very popular with the sponsors.

Tiny re-cap: Naomi Osaka refused to give press interviews at Roland Garros, stating that the press focused on negative aspects and it affected her mental health, and was willing to be fined, asking for the money to be donated to mental health charities.

Following the high-profile furore that followed, the fact that - obviously - the fines could not be earmarked for any cause, and that the authorities also had the ability to ban her from the competition as well as fines and would probably do so, Naomi withdrew. She also withdrew from Wimbledon and said she needed some space and time away from the media spotlight.

The board was pretty split, with very convincing arguments (I found) on both sides.

Now Naomi has just tweeted a link to her new Vogue cover and inside feature photo shoot.

Certain people are accusing her of having her cake and eating it too.

I'm only putting it out there....

Didn't she also host the Met Gala.  This sounds awful but I hope she has an honest manager because she doesn't come across as all that bright, easy pickings for a dishonest person to defraud

I imagine Vogue's print run is scheduled months in advance, well before all the controversy and out of Naomi's control

To be fair, the Vogue thing may have been done a while ago, it's for the August edition of Vogue Japan or because it was for the Japanese edition, it might be a very sympathetic article. Who knows?

Yes, but I think the nay-sayers are pointing more to the fact that Naomi has been tweeting about it

She probably has to do the minimum advertising for it?

Yes, but she has to do the 'minimum advertising' for the WTA/Grand Slams too. i.e. the press interviews.

And chose not to.

She could have chosen not to do this advertising for this too

While I don't entirely disagree with you or anyone on this POV, a tweet/insta post is a lot different to media and pressers.

I agree. And I'm not really being a major advocate here (I did think - and I still think - that players should do interviews but the Vogue thing is a bit left field)

However, the nay-sayers would also say that, yes, a tweet is very different - but that's exactly the point - she's happy to attract major press attention when it's completely on her terms, but not otherwise.

A brief ban from the tour might stop this nonsense, how the federations don't back down

Mr Trump always used to blame his "social media team" when a tweet misfired: Does Ms Osaka do all her own tweeting?

... there is also a subtle difference between broadcasting a tweet and answering questions. One you can control, the other you can't.

Edit: spelling.

We may see Osaka as a tennis player but others see her as a commodity, a business opportunity . Never doubt that there are many people earning a good living from Osaka and decisions will not always be in her best interests but that of the ever expanding 'team'.

Too many people making too much money out of an individual so often ends in chaos. You see it in sport, music and anywhere an individual can make money for others.
I'm sure there are excellent managers, agents, advisors out there. Didn't seem to be particularly present for Osaka.

Thats my feeling too, wouldn't be surprised if in a few years time we hear she is broke, getting vibes like you do with American heavyweight boxers. She doesn't appear to be that bright or particularly mature, ripe for exploitation in my opinion
