New Poll Event - favourite former foreign player (grand slam finalists )

As it happens, it turns out I had included Kay Stammers twice already by mistake so I have randomly replaced one of her two entries with Kim and so both are in. Not sure how long Ms Stammers will survive in it but we will see!

Yes, I think she's likely to be in the word game longer than the poll! wink

I think you all underestimate the power of the Kay Stammers Fan Club!

Oh my yes, you've uncovered a gem here Jon, and maybe you're right there Bagel - she actually dated JFK!!!

This quotation is too funny - the 'typical British girl tennist'.. Can you imagine her today!!! winkbiggrin

Appearance[edit]

Stammers' physical appearance ensured that she attracted more than the usual interest from the press[3] and public. In 1936, for example, an article in Time magazine described her as "pretty Kay Stammers, whom English critics like to describe as the 'typical' British girl tennist, and who likes lacrosse, cricket, lump sugar and planters' punches."[6] Stammers' tennis clothes were much detailed in the newspapers. She designed her own shorts in uncrushable linen cut full to four inches above the knee and wore them with an open-necked shirt.[2] While playing on the west coast of the United States, Stammers visited Hollywood studios and had a screen test.[2] She dated John F. Kennedy and was photographed with him at the Kennedy family's Hyannis Port compound.[2] She said that JFK was "spoilt by women. I think he could snap his fingers and they'd come running. And of course he was terribly attractive and rich and unmarried a terrific catch really ... I thought he was divine."[2]

I like the list of things she likes, incl lump sugar and planters punches?!

It sounds like she is the Anna Kournikova of her time!

Imagine, I have just raised one name from the past in this poll (plus Kim), just wait for the other 98 names to be unveiled!

PS I have also just realised from this that she is British and thus excluded from this event!!

I thought she was American! Others may creep through the net of course, but I am afraid Kay Stammers is disqualified!!!!

Better make sure any other Brits are disqualified, not  that there are too many of them. Between Bunny Austin and Andy Murray there was only John Lloyd in the men.   Post war Angela Buxton and Pat Ward were  both  runners up and Mortimer,Brasher, Truman, Jones, Wade and Barker were all winners. All the ladies glory was between the years 1955 and 1977.

Thanks Rosamund! Yes, I had just gone back through the list and realised I also had Pat Ward in it as well!! the wikipedia page I worked from didnt give countries pre 1968 so I was guessing. I also found I had missed out Vera Sukova (because I had Helene Sukova in it and thus when checking surnames had crossed her off - Vera of course is Helena's Mum!) So Vera Sukova will directly replace Pat Ward in the draw to avoid having to redraw the whole thing!

I think it is all in shape now - if when I have posted it, anyone spots a player I have missed (remember, it goes back to the beginning of the war in the ladies, 1963 in the mens - I think I have mens all in good shape) then I will just have to add the player into the 2nd round as a bye!

Haha yeah, well I'm glad you provided the chance to dig up Kay Stammer's bio even if she is disqualified!

She was also a ground breaking Australian tv journalist in the 1970s and 1980s. Busy woman!

Wow, this is going to get tough further in. Though some big name groups you generally kept my personal favourites apart in R1, though clearly not so for some people. But I will have big choices to come.

And with only 3 going through, tactical voting will be a risk!

I was worried the fact I'd had to go back to 1939 to fill the field might dilute votes, so it's good to see some good activity and many thanks to rosamund for your insight!
Will close around 6pm tomorrow and mens will be up around the same time.

As a reminder, the mens draws will go up this evening, around 6. At a similar time, the ladies draws will finish and I will call the results. Any groups with ties, those tied in qualifying places will go into a short play off with the other ties in their group to run from the time it is posted (between 6 and 7) and around 11 pm tonight - it is late as I need to collect my daughter from work at the local tea bag factory (!) at 10 pm and so wont get back until later!

At the moment, groups 2 and 3 have qualifying ties and so as it stands, will have play off votes this evening. All could change over the course of today though!
