New Poll Event - favourite former foreign player (grand slam finalists )

So some advance notice of the next poll. Weve done current British, current foreign, retired/non current British, and so to square it all out, here is favourite non current foreign.

I needed a way of discerning who would get in, there are literally thousands of players. Over the years, ranking systems have changed, or indeed appeared, tournament structures moved around. The only constant over 100 plus years are the grand slams.

I decided to have 100 players in both the mens and womens poll events and, counting back through grand slam finalists (which is a good currency for success and perhaps more likely to produce popular players) found I could create a field of 100 grand final reaching,  former players in mens womens.

The womens cut off goes back to 1939, the mens 1963, reflecting that over the years certain women have dominated more, whereas mens has typically been more spread and stronger depth.

Poll structure

Round 1 - 10 groups of 10, top 3 will go through from each group only. Ties will have a run off, so only 30 will get through to the semis.

Semifinals - 3 groups of 10, again 3 will progress to the final. Ties will again have run offs , ensuring 9 in total will reach the finals. Semifinals will be drawn to ensure no player plays another from their first round group.

FINAL - 9 players, most votes wins.

Any ties will go into a ties play off for each group with the first x necessary to round out the field of 3 from each group for the next round going through. If still ties, then I will select the winner (s) of the tie play off based on their success in slams over their career, ie I will take a multi slam winner through over a one time finalist.

Timing

Round 1 - women Monday evening, close Tuesday around 6pm. Any ties play offs Tuesday evening. Mens will start Tuesday evening, close Wednesday 6pm and ties play offs Wed evening.

Semis- Womens -wednesday evening until thursday 6pm , ties play offs  Thursday evening; Mens thursday evening to Friday 6 pm, ties play offs friday evening.

Final -  womens friday evening until Saturday  evening. Mens saturday evening through Sunday evening and then any tie play off for first place will be from Sunday evening until Monday  (18th May) evening.

It will probably be more nostalgic than the brits event and I suspect it will be more brutal in getting rid of dead wood in the event, hence less rounds and less qualifiers.

Womens Polls will be posted monday evening as per above, womens first round up first.

Note , former players means any player who's played a slam final and doesn't have any current ranking points or hasnt played a tour event in 2020. Thus Wozniacki and Sharapova appear, kuznetsova does have a current ranking.
Clijsters has returned and played Dubai in 2020 so is excluded.

If folks think I'm wrong re any of the players I list or I miss anyone, as 100 is a lot to work through, please shout but also please remember the rule I've applied above. If I have missed someone or, indeed, double counted I will put the "missed" player in as a bye to round 2/semis out of fairness to them and just make the semis entry into 31 players.

PS I have drawn the groups, there are some humdingers and one or two patsy's as you might expect. But I think each group will get everyone voting thinking long and hard.

PPS thanks to Brittak for the Random Number Generator site - worked a treat!

www.random.org/

PPPS although random, it has thrown up some fascinating and groan worth match ups through the draws!

First polls for womens will go up tonight, as I'm ready to go, once the current event is finished.

For the avoidance of doubt, re some recent players.

Wozniacki and Sharapova are both retired and thus are counted as former and in this poll.

Kuznetsova is still ranked and thus excluded.

Clijsters returned in Dubai in February and is thus current and excluded from the poll although she jasnt yet got her ranking back as far as I can tell, it is her own plan to be playing again and that process started.

For the men, Baghdatis is retired and thus takes part.

It will be very interesting whether Kim stays with that plan or not now! I think you're right to exclude her at this time Jon, though for the poll it is unfortunate... i can't really see her coming back in all honesty, and think she would have gained a lot of votes here... but I agree if she hasn't announced that she is not going to try and continue a comeback then she should still be considered a current player.

Yeah, it was a tough call! And I am wavering. Indy didnt include Kim in the favourite current WTA event as she wasnt ranked, so she missed that also...which seems a little unfair that she would miss out on both...I am not posting the polls until tonight as mentioned so am going to muse and see if any other thoughts come in, although my original thought stays for now!

In essence, it will come down to Kim or 1939 Wimbledon Runner Up, Kay Stammers being included in the field?

Ummm Kim I think Jon... That's 81 years ago now!!!

In terms of Kim not being included in a list of current players because she has no ranking... I think I would still regard her as an ex-player right now. She may have played that one match she lost against Jo, but I think circumstances have changed so much again that I will be extremely surprised if she does come back seriously after all this is over.. and even if she does, I'm not sure it matters for the purposes of this poll. Her record that counts and what people will remember her by, is already nearly a decade or more old...

Actually Garbine also beat Kim on her return.

 Agreed, Kim is in!

As it happens, it turns out I had included Kay Stammers twice already by mistake so I have randomly replaced one of her two entries with Kim and so both are in. Not sure how long Ms Stammers will survive in it but we will see!

I think you all underestimate the power of the Kay Stammers Fan Club!
