2020 Tennis Season - Poll Results

Ok, you are largely on the right lines!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Open_(tennis)

So, based on that wiki entry and its references, prior to the creation of the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the establishment of its world championship events in 1913 (which morphed into the Grand Slams of modern times) it (the Irish Open) was considered by players and historians one of the four most important tennis tournaments to win.[1][2][3] the others being Wimbledon, the U.S. National championships and the Northern Championships.

So the 4 biggest events at the start of tennis history where:

The Northern Championships (in 4th place) held at Didsbury - and hence the Didsbury Plate as the last poll name (this of course is now the Manchester Challenger event we all know)
The Irish Open - held at the Fitzwilliam Club in Dublin - and hence the Fitzwilliam Vase (The Irish Open is now a M25 event on the ITF circuit)
The US National Championships - originally held at the Newport Casino, which is where the International Hall of Fame is located and now of course hosts the Newport RI ATP250 event, being 2nd most important event and hence the "Casino Trophy" in these polls
Wimbledon - The All England Championships venue originally held at Worple Road, and hence the "Worple Cup" for the final of these polls as the Grand Daddy of all the events and the most important of the original Big 4!

A little bit more challenging than the previous ones I put up!

I will put up polls for the plate and the vase in the next few hours.

No play offs currently looking likely for the semis but these can easily change!

Final positions all listed above, bar the top 6 - take a look where your favourite came. Given the polls over the past 2 months or would have had a few hundred players voted upon (I hate to even thinkk about the number) then coming in the top 50 or so is a decent achievement!

For those who are interested in thus sort of stuff, I have run some stats on our events / polls to date, makes interesting reading!

Champion of Champions Event (this was the 8 man, 8 woman knockout event of top slam champs) - 190 votes place over 14 polls - average of 13.6 per poll

Favourite British Player (the mixed event across current Brits) - 252 votes across 9 polls - average of 28.0 per poll. This was the highest average and clearly driven by the mixed nature of the event.

Wimbledon Invitational (16 men, 16 women, Wimbledon knockout event) - 499 votes over 30 polls - average of 16.6 per poll.

Favourite ATP and WTA players (this was Brits and foreign current players) - 432 votes over 22 polls - average of 19.6 per poll

Favourite Foreign player (current ) - Indy ran this and took us up a notch with 570 votes over 28 polls - average of 20.4 per poll

Favourite British (former) player - Brittak ran this and the sheer scale of this still makes me go into a cold sweat! - 1020 votes were cast (massive) over 48 polls (incl play offs) for an average of 21.25 votes per poll. Hats off for the scale of the event and it was also very popular!

Favourite Foreign (former) player - the one I then ran and tried to match Brittak with, but failed! 785 votes over 38 polls (incl tie breakers polls) at average of 20.7 per poll

Overall we have managed 3748 votes cast over 189 polls in total the past few weeks, an average of 19.8 per poll. The current favourite of favourites polls will have at least 11 and take us to 200 in total which is great. There is a chance we can reach 4000 votes cast in total if it is well supported and/or we get a few tie break play offs as well!

Either way, nearly 4000 votes is a great level of support, many thanks to everyone and please do support this next week so we can actually say we reached 4000!!!

Just an update to the numbers. In this final set of polls we have had 21 polls in total and, although one or two more may come in, we have had 486 votes in total at an average of 23.14, the 2nd best polls series to date from that perspective.

Overall, more importantly, we have ended up with 4,234 total votes over the last few weeks, beating 4,000! And we have done 210 polls in total! At an average of 20.16 votes per poll, beating the 20 per poll average!

Thanks everyone for taking part. We have just 3 1/2 hours to crown our champion of all the events, lets face it, it will be Andy Murray - perhaps we could have saved 4000 plus votes and said we might have expected that outcome from the start!

Um, except it wasn't just about who is the final champion Jon!

It was a lot of fun thank you and I think we've all learned a lot and so my thanks indeed to you for your ideas and hosting, and indeed too to Brittak who embarked us on the historical path as well!

I think it's been a pleasure, and I've learned a lot and enjoyed it also.

I think we are quite possibly polled out now as a Board, I certainly am, but I will try and think of new ideas, although I cant promise it will be any time soon!

I will however confirm the final standings for this poll in an hour or so.

What I dont know, how did Evo win that original favourite British player poll over Andy? I reckon the Dan Evans Fan Page twitterers invaded the board, that's why we got 38 votes in that final!

... or just Andy was very rusty at that point plus maybe lacking a bit of motivation for a purely domestic contest while Dan was throwing the kitchen sink at it. Over the weeks he has then gone on to be more and more dominant

Thanks Jon (and Michael for your kind words) for this poll and all the others as well (Great analysis on all the polls btw!).

A great finale to the polling season and a worthy winner at the end. Thanks also to Indy for their poll.

its all been terrific fun and has helped to keep us entertained through this tennis free zone - hopefully it wont be too long before things get up and running again, even if just domestically to start with.

Cheers

There are lots of polls of course we could have done but haven't- favourite doubles pairs, for example, I thought about fantasy team events among the top nations, favourites for each continent. But eventually it feels like overkill and sometimes it is best to stop whilst the going is still relatively positive.

I hope, too, we can have some real tennis sometime. Watching the German football left me cold. I even took too watching my sons Football Manager game last night, where he is managing LK Lodz in Poland , and the game had reached the Qatar World Cup in 2022. For what's it's worth, England beat Scotland in the last 16, Spain in last 8, losing to France 5-0 in the semis, and France went onto beat Portugal in the final , to retain their trophy.
