RE: 2020 Tennis Season - Poll Results

You missed a trick there JonH - Halle and Mallorca are the wrong way round.  wink

Actually, not quite! Although the result is the same, I got Bad Homborg and Berlin the wrong way round! The group with dan, kyle etc is the third group drawn!

Btw Laura and Venus are the only players yet to score. With perhaps half the total votes expected in, it's going to end up very much spread around. I predict one group will end in a tie play off!

OK, this is what JonH intended. WTA and ATP grass tounaments in Europe.

Semi final one - June 8th S-Hertogenbosch and Stuttgart (Yes, I know S-Hertogenbosch is ATP as well)

Semi final two - June 15th Berlin and Halle

Demi final three - June 21st Bad Homburg and Mallorca

Yayyy! Sadly let down with an admin error by my assistant!

Group name for final also selected, duly appropriate and historically suitable!

I have a feeling some of the regular voters are holding back a little to see how the voting proceeds before placing their votes. Maybe some tactical work is going on!

All semis groups very tight. Previous experience from round one would suggest weve maybe 6 to 10 votes per group still to come in so a lot can happen with over 12 hours left. But voting patterns are hard to tell, and I suspect I'll need to be watching closely for any last minute sweeps!

At the moment the 's-hertogenbosch-Stuttgart group has a tie looming, 4 ways for 2nd place, but all groups could easily end in a jumble as the day progresses.

Hi all - just to keep things lively, I am always conscious with a final that if it is all about that, if it isnt close things can get a bit dull...

The final will , subject to ties play offs, go up this evening. Alongside it I plan 3 extra polls to keep everyone interested as we draw to a close this series of polls.

The polls tonight will be:

The FINAL - top 6 qualifiers for the WORPLE CUP

Losers Final - those in places 3-6 in the semis (so 12 players) playing off for the CASINO Trophy

Consolation Final - those in places 3 and 4 in the first round (so 18 players in one big mash up) playing off for places 19-36 for the FITZWILLIAM Vase

Plate Final - those players in place 5 and 6 in round 1 (so 18 players again) playing off for places 37-54 for the DIDSBURY Plate

They should be fun and probably impossible to vote on but heh!

the lowest ranked polls will go up slightly ahead so the final still ends in glory!

Final question - what is the link and why for the names of the 4 polls - Worple, Casino, Fitzwilliam and Didsbury?

Now that is much more like a challenge ! I have a possible answer, but can't yet fathom out whether the connection is what you intended.

Give it a go ! You can have multiple guesses!

There is a logic behind each one and then an answer. If you dont get it first time, I will give another clue!

The four oldest tennis clubs in the British Isles?

After a fair bit of googling and a lot of head-scratching I'll say...

Worple Road - original home of Wimbledon - 1870's
Casino - Newport - 1880's - hosted US National Championships, which eventually became the US Open
Didsbury - Manchester - home of the Northern Open - formed 1879 (Didsbury TC also exists, formed 1922
Fitzwilliam - Dublin - 1877 - home of the Irish Open

Casino jars with me, but it is a grass court venue, if not in this country.

Wimbledon was originally located off Worple Road (now its Church Road). Casino tennis club is in New South Wales, Australia, as far as I can tell. Fitzwilliam tennis club is based in Dublin and claims to be one of the oldest tennis clubs in the world. Didsbury tennis club is in Manchester.... Quite why these are the four names you've dredged up though Jon escapes me!!

Yes it seems that the relevant Casino is probably in the US. They don't all have grass now but Didsbury has astroturf. Fitzwilliam has artificial grass too. The Newport Casino grounds are now the site of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
