Oh how strange - sorry I had no idea different areas worked differently!
Well - Inspired by this exchange, I went online and in fact was able to get my booking, yippee! It certainly hadnt worked but all is good now and I managed to get Dec 4th all sorted.

I was talking to Bulgarian colleagues this week and what a mess their vaccination programme is.
They only have 33% with at least one vaccination and they have the highest covid death rate in the EU.
They don't trust the government or the politicians and are now being forced to get vaccinated if they wish to go out in public for a meal etc

My Bulgarian colleague reports exactly the same, the distrust goes back to Communist times and beyond. Its not just Bulgaria but many of the ex iron curtain nations have similar attitudes
No skiing in Austria due to lockdown, but after several phone calls following a holiday cancellation email, I am in Spain.
Mask wearing was compulsory on the plane (well, apart from the guy who made his two packs of Pringles last the entire flight).
Seems they are more sensible in Spain, as mask wearing is compulsory in public spaces and outside where social distancing is not possible; also its warm, so able to spend more time outside. I am hoping the UK will see sense and adopt this policy too, as Covid numbers seem to be rising and we maybe heading for a winter crisis.

And proper ones, not flappy single cloth ones under your nose.
Be sensible everybody please, says he on repeat Play your part.
Compulsory in Scotland in enclosed public spaces, as in Spain, mask wearing is increasingly being ignored, requiring rather irritated reminders from the Scottish Goverment who are at least sensible enough to have such, to my mind, so flamin obvious rules in place. Can make such a huge difference to the new case figures. But for now the Scottish new case figures have edged back up to around the UK rate and that stubbornly remains far too high, at close to 40,000 a day ( around 400 per 100K a week ).

Oh, you're talking about Covid restrictions. I thought you were just talking about people in general
In general probably applies too - maybe its the sunshine? Definitely with respect to Corona, even the gardeners watering outside at 7.30am are wearing masks. Pretty strict about enforcing mask wearing by the hotel guests too. Moving forward, will be interesting to compare countries that enforce mask wearing (eg Spain and Scotland) with England
I know I am probably preaching to the converted on here, but this chart shows the correlation between the percentage of the population vaccinated and the number of deaths per million in the last 14 days.
The UK is not on the chart as it is an EU Commission chart for the 27 countries of the EU, but that is irrelevant in terms of the message it gets across.
Flights to S Africa suspended due to concerns over a new variant named Omicron. The new variant has ~50 mutations, 32 of which are found in the spike protein. These mutations may make the virus more transmissible than the delta variant and make the current vaccines less effective against the virus
I think what is being missed is the massive impact not being vaccinated is having on the NHS. Teams are still working flat out & a drive to demonstrate recovery is limiting the resources available to areas that havent stopped.
Delayed presentations make problems so much harder to deal with needing increased time and resources, process becomes really inefficient when trying to give equity of access to anti-vaxers and COVID deniers who are often vulnerable people with very fixed views. It is absolutely clear to me that taking such a view can be catastrophic if you have another serious problem that needs addressing.
Vaccination regardless of your view is essential to protect the healthcare resources we have. Waiting lists are developing for everything including stuff that wont wait.
The Omicron variant is in the UK - no surprise there Wonder what the governments response to this will be? The triggering of Plan B (WFH, mask wearing and Covid passports)?
I am still coming across people who a) think the Corona pandemic is a myth or b) refuse to be vaccinated due to unsubstantiated fears
With the emergence of the Omicron variant ( and perhaps the already continuing high level of new cases? ) Boris has indeed announced compulsory mask wearing in shops and on public transport.
Apparently this is a proven simple and very useful measure that really helps control new cases.
