SUMMARY POSTS - For Polls British players since 1968 not currently ranked

As intimated on the last poll, I will try and set up a poll for favourite past GB players.

i will work on it over next few days with a view to get in place by the weekend. Please bear with me as I am new to doing this!

This is a brilliant idea. The problem is that over fhe years I had 2 favourite  Gb female players whereas at least these days I only have 1.

To whet the appetite.....

There will be separate mens and womens events and a bonus event to follow at the end.

Qualifying events on Friday with main draws to start on Saturday!

Well done for separating up the sexes. I posted about that earlier - I mentioned some of our great female players from the past, but realised afterwards that I mentioned no men - will be interesting to see how the likes of John Lloyd and Jeremy Bates fare against Tim Henman. Looking forward to it.

How many players do you expect to include ? It could be thousands over the years who have been ranked, but presumably you are somehow cutting off at a certain level?!

Its actually harder than you might think!
Ive been playing around with a number of criteria and hopefully Ive come up with something reasonable.

I have a solid list of those that are direct entrants with a next list that I think need to qualify.

More to follow.....

Hope Lucie Ahl and Karen Cross are there, otherwise there will be sulks (well from one person, and almost certainly only one).

So here we go for the next polls -
Favourite currently not ranked British player since 1968 - separate men and womens polls.

Developing a list for inclusion has been rather difficult as it covers such a large timescale and in the early days of Open Tennis there werent any ranking systems that can be used and I wanted to ensure a good mix of players. I have therefore come up with the criteria as set out below and I hope that this works for everybody. I am sorry if your favourite blast from the past is not included and apologies for any errors!

As there is such a broad range of player, I have decided to use some extra rounds than we might normally have as they should give some scope for voting for more players across the various eras.

For both men and women there will be a qualifying round and then four rounds in the main draw.

MENS POLL - Entry Requirements

Criteria for direct entry.

- Players in a Davis Cup team from 1968 - 2019. There are 48 players in this category.
- Players who won at least one singles match at Wimbledon in this period. There are 16 further players in this category.

Criteria for entry into qualifying competition.

- Players who competed in the singles event at Wimbledon but did not win a singles match in this period. There are 34 players in this category.
- There will be sixteen wildcards (more than the womens so as to bring the number up to being broadly similar). The wildcards will include some known forum favourites!

WOMENS POLL - Entry Requirements.

Criteria for direct entry

- Players in a Fed/Federation Cup Team from 1968 - 2019 and Wightman Cup Team from 1968 - 1989. There are 46 players in this category.
- Players who won at least one singles match at Wimbledon in this period. There are 17 further players in this category.

Criteria for entry into qualifying competition.

- Players who competed in the singles event at Wimbledon but did not win a singles match in this period. There are 44 players in this category.
- There will be 6 wildcards. The wildcards will include some known forum favourites!

SCHEDULE

The qualifying round will be 5 groups of 10 for both men and women. A maximum of the top 16 of each across the 5 groups will qualify for the main draw. This is because I feel that a number of the players here might struggle to pick up votes (I dont recognise quite a few of them!)

I then aim to run the main draws as follows:-

Round 1 (80 players) - 10 groups of 8. Top 4 in each group qualify plus ties. Random draw.

QF (c40 players) - 5 groups of 8. Top 3 in each group qualify plus ties.

SF (c15/16 players) - 2 groups of 8. Top 4 in each group qualify plus ties.

FINAL (c8 players) - 1 group of 8. Any tie for 1st place will result in a play-off.

Obviously some adjustments to this may be required as we go along....

Hopefully this all makes sense but happy to clarify anything.

I aim to get the qualifying polls up by Friday morning with a close of early Saturday with main draws to commence later on Saturday.

Enjoy!

Very impressed with that selection criteria and format - just about anyone who ever competed to any decent level will be included. Also impressed with you finding out a list of all the Brits who competed at Wimbledon but never won a match. I think I would be lucky to name about ten of these, despite the fact that I guess I must have seen double that number play, as Brit watching at Wimbledon is my favourite thing to do for the first four days of the tournament. I am guessing that there will be quite a few players that none of us has ever heard of - could anyone name a Brit who never won a Wimbledon match but competed in the 1960's, without using the internet to look it up - that would be impressive and erudite, even for this forum.

Thanks Andy. Largely a case of wading through my book of old Wimbledon draws. Yes a number of these were unknowns to me even though I have followed tennis since the early 70s but wanted to include them to preserve the range and integrity. I suspect many might not get a vote....
