Can't seem to find Emily's match on the usual ITF site, but it's on Bet365. 3 breaks already, 1-3*

Watched a few points. Emily trying to take the initiative against the clay courter. But seems to be slow to get to the net and unsure of her shot selection when she gets there

I've watched most of this set and, yes, in the second half she's actually been playing reasonably, as you say, taking the initiative a bit, you can at least see what she's trying to do, even if it's not that well executed all the time.

The first half of the set though was just awful - tons of unforced errors, bad footwork.... she made life really difficult for herself, just gave the games away.

Emily gets a second break but hasn't held yet. *2-5

Alves has maybe not been in the best of form lately but looking at her last year's activity she has had plenty of decent looking wins, and looks worthy of her ranking.

And that sort of ranking has generally been a step too far for Emily.

Hope not today!

More of the same. and when Alves comes to the net Emily doesn't seem to have much variety

Good point, AV.

However, her opponent doesn't seem to be on great form (lost in qualis in the last 25k and in R1 of the one before that where she was only in via an SE; even lost in R1 of a 15k this year, although made the final in another)

So I'm hoping Emily comes along a bit more ready for the races this time!

A cheeky CD bet in the nature of Cheltenham and all that? smile

Well, that was 10p that never even had a glimmer of hope....

Emily has a good serve but other than that her only weapon is an inside out forehand that is pretty inconsistent. Work to do.

I didn't watch any of this match, but from the comments above it sounds like Emily hasn't progressed much in the last couple of years. I saw her play at Chiswick in 2018 and 2019, and wasn't very impressed either time. Inconsistency in both groundstrokes and serve, and poor shot selection was the problem back then.......

So what are her (multiple) coaches actually doing ? (I saw a team of four at one of her matches)

Good question. I would say that she has actually regressed in the last 12 months and alongside a few other younger lower ranked players whose career trajectroy as at least stalled.
