Week 9 - WTA 125 $162K Indian Wells USA Hard

California have declared a state of emergency, hopefully things will stablilise before Miami.  California has a big Chinese community who may have been in China for Chinese New Year , Florida doesn't or ateast didn't when I lived there. Chinas cases are now dropping significantly, if thats the natural progression then we should start to see cases around the world drop off next month, if its because of how draconian China have been then the rest of the world is in for the long haul.

South Korea's new cases are also starting to fall off. It will be interesting to see if that fall is sustained, since their measures have been much more democratically imposed.

This may be true in China but for Europe and the Americas the rate is increasing in a big way. Also we have no idea what will happen when the restrictions in travel etc in China and South Korea are lifted. It would only take 1 infected person to start the spread once again due to the low immunity in the world's population.

Must be a very good chance Miami will also be cancelled as a public event. Can't really see why they couldn't proceed behind closed dorrs though which would at leat keep the integrity of the tennis year in place.

Lots of questions now about what happens to rankings etc.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Chinese experience will be reflected in the US.

It's not the 'natural' progression but the progression based on a very strict, centralised, authoritarian response.

The US cannot mimic that (for many reasons)

It is ironic that having turned a blind eye to its 'underclass' and allowing a country to have so many uninsured/underinsured people and no regular sick pay will now make the US so vulnerable.

South Korea is seeing a similar drop off without the draconian measures implemented by China so its still wait and see. SARs disappeared pretty much of its own accord, its the conundrum that most pharmeceutical companies face with these things as often they spend a lot of money on a vaccine only to find that its pretty much gone by the time the vaccine is ready.

But, again, South Korea has excellent primary health care and social system (unlike the US) - this is key - and also did implement national measures on a far stricter basis than the US.

South Korea has done good extensive testing from the get go. They haven't tried to hide the extent of their outbreak for any reason. That allowed them to define and categorise it. They also have a broad cultural acceptance of civic utilitarianism - in this instance: when in crisis, the government asks you to do something it is best for the society that, within reason, you do it.
That means people follow advice and take great personal responsibility for not spreading the virus by following best practice advice.
The supremacy of Individualism in Europe & USA works against that, as (broadly) a large percentage of those populations believes they know best, contrary advice is just 'heath & safety jobsworths'. Whatever they want to do is what they'll do, and the greater good can go stuff itself.

If nations have the resource and means to test completely and contain, isolate and treat efficiently, and their populations help facilitate this by listening to and practicing the healthcare advice that they are given, then they will have better containment and outcomes. South Korea have been a good example of this. For the converse, you can look to Iran and USA.

Where are we? Well, I know someone who recently came back from Iran through Germany, and at the airport here was only asked about the last country they passed through. They had the integrity to mention that they had been to an area bordering what is now a hotspot, and were taken for testing (thankfully negative). Had they not brought it up themselves though, they would have just walked through the airport and out into the wider world.
