Week 8 - WTA International ($250k) - Acapulco, Mexico - Hard

With a 1 st serve percentage under 50% she's not giving herself much of a chance but pre injury Katie did have a habit of starting slowly

That first set was certainly a pretty hideous set of tennis, from both players

Second set looking very different though - serve a little better, but not great, but striking the ball more confidently. 2-6 4-1*

Yes. A lot better. As you say, the addict, striking the ball better, hitting through it better, committing to the ball more.

Mind you, don't understand how di Lorenzo has managed to get ranked near the top 100....

di Lorenzo has a fairly consistent set of counters making up her total of 500+ points (OER just froze on me). Not in the same league as Katie though.

2-6 6-3 *3-0

dddd it is  very - what does she do successfully? Shes relatively speedy I guess?

At the risk of sounding like I have a similar analysis level of Andrew Castle- when Katie is ON she looks like a genuine top 30/ 50 player, its just not that consistent yet.
Also am I misremembering or was it very much her backhand that seemed her stronger side when she was younger? Whereas now it seems her forehand is her most important weapon, no?

Good to get the win for Katie.

That's the highest ranked player she has beaten since Zarina Diyas ( then WR 107 ) in that Fed Cup match last April that saw her miss the next six months.

Stay fit and well and she should get more consistency back into her game and rapidly climb back up the rankings. For now she has defended her R2 points from here last year.

Tough test next - if Katie wins she would be back in the GB top 10 - but not important. She needs to keep winning these WTA R1 matches - the 30 points on offer is the same as a 25K final.

Great to see Katie get a win here.

Perhaps the first set can partially be put down to a late change of opponent. Good to see her get a MD win again in a WTA.

Possibly but the disparity in 1st serve was massive Katie was down in the 40's Di Lorenzo in the 90's which wasn't sustainable although I dropped out at the end of the 1st game of the 2nd set so really pleased to see her come through. Katies 1st serve doesn't seem to have made a proper reappearance yet, its frequently down in the 50s and she really needs to be making things easier for herself right now not harder but it will come with more regular matches.

Really pleased to see that result! I turned in after the first few games.

Looking at the last 16, you'd think this was a strong W60 / normal W100. Only seeds 6, 7, and 8 remain, and pretty much everyone will have played at least one ITF event within the last 6 months. Heather is the 7th seed, and Katie plays the 6th seed, but there's no obvious favourite left. In fact, someone (not me, ha) always put the pre tournament outright odds up on TF, and 11 of the top 16 favourites (excluding qualifiers) have bitten the dust already.

Another abysmal defeat for Sloane Stephens, this time against  potential Mexican FC opponent.

Last year the semi finals were

Kenin vs Andreescu

Vekic vs Y Wang (,who went on to take the title)
