Capitulation complete. Absolutely dire from Ali, but Eva does have a lovely whipped forehand from which she got a lot of winners. So she now has a surprise 5 WTA points. This is not yet the match to tell if we have a new potential star however, it's going to need Eva to overcome some better opposition than she met today.

I saw Ali Collins in Glasgow and her serve was woeful as were her overheads. Her movement around the court not great. She looks like a model on the court rather than a tennis player. In Glasgow she was being watched by Judy Murray but there was nothing to cheer. Ali was a promising junior and touted by the Murrays. She was over in USA with Nicola Slater but this seems to have done her no good. She had a MDWC in Glasgow as Maia was injured and Ali was the only Scottish player in the draw.

From what I understood, she was in the US at the academy in Florida, and when that didn't work, came back and worked with Nik Slater here, and in France.
And I thought she might have spent some time, after Nik didn't work out, in Spain, no?
But I agree completely - quite a lot of promise as a youngster, but some real issues since then....
If her movement isn't great then she is wasting her time, I think it's the biggest issue in the move from juniors to seniors and should be one of the top criteria for funding decisions

ie a starting point of being a decent athlete? Sounds sensible to me!
As opposed to have they got the money and can they fund it?
Ali did well to get past Esther Adeshina in the QR1 round, that was the MTB that Ali eventually won 16-14. I had quite fancied Esther to win there. But then Ali beat Beth convincingly yesterday, when she seemed to play ok, or at least a lot better than today. But today I don't know where Ali was mentally, maybe she underestimated Eva, but when she needed to up her focus and get a grip on things, especially when she was up in games, she kept failing to do so and instead gave the advantage back to Eva each time. Her error count was massive. Ali is 19 now and on today's showing she doesn't look like she is going to raise her ranking much anytime soon.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with her movement - she's nippy, and fit, and good reflexes - her dad was a prof football player and (without knowing mum) Ali has his genes.
But she seems to what my step-dad would call 'get a gob on' - I think she chooses not to move, rather than she can't.
I agree with CD, Ali has looked fit and athletic with quite good natural movement when I have seen her in the past.
She has a fair amount of natural talent ( better than most at the net ) but I am not sure if she has had the dedication to put in the hours to sort out an inconsistent basic game and at times particular tennis movenents. Gave up a USA opportunity fairly early on to come back to being coached ( at least for a time ) by former doubles specialist Nicky Slater. Not sure that was helpful. ( oh, as mentioned earlier by CD ).
Is a bit moody and that can extend to not chasing when she has decided it's not her day.

Happy with the OOP tomorrow. I'll try and get there for 10am to catch most of Jack's match, and then mainly Marni, Emma and then Jodie (and Tauson) after that.
Obviously some matches will finish before others, but most of those should follow on from each other. Much better than just getting all the women's out the way at 10am and 11.30am, which I'm sure has happened before.
