Week 8 - ITF (W25) Sunderland, GBR Hard

Ah, thanks. I stopped looking at Tunisia after Gabi lost, but I see your note in that thread.

Emma and Freya have the short straws.

But some very nice draws for the others.

Shame to have two LLs, have three chances and not get even one of them.

Kostova has lost 7 of her last 8 matches (all of them in straight sets) stretching back to her win over Naomi B last October, and the only one she did win in that period was an UNR WC, so she obviously isn't in great form at all - she's lost to a few in the 250-350 range as well in that time, so despite still being top 200, it's one I think Emma should really be looking to win, she might even be favourite, but the fall last week makes me a bit less confident, although I'll be very interested to see how she gets on.

The bookies have got Eva and Ali exactly 50/50, both 5/6, quite surprised about that. 4 of the 6 women's matches are streamed, including all 3 involving GB women.

Ace, are you sure court 8 is being streamed? With Grace's match?

I thought it was only 5 and 6?

Hi CD, I could have sworn I saw a little video box on Bet365 next to Grace's match, but I was just going to start streaming the Fett match, and you're right, no stream for Grace, that's one of the 2 none streamed matches of the 6 - I was hoping to amend before anyone realised, ha.

No problem - I suddenly got excited and thought I'd have to re-jig my tennis watching schedule !!! smile

As scottie predicted, Freya got completely taken apart in the first set. And although the second set was far more respectable, it was still pretty one-sided - Freya too far back, letting the ball drop too low and not having the speed or top-spin to get it up and down, slapping rather at the ball, and serve stats weren't great.

Final score 1-6 4-6

NB Eva Shaw is a very good prospect according to many but I've never seen her - glad it's a streamed court

Impressed by Eva.

She's only 14, born 2005 (a year younger than Matilda, but far more 'grown up' in build)

Good arm speed, acceleration through the ball, very nice technique, and an aggressive mind-set.

THat said, Ali's server has been woeful - a ton of DFs, a really low first serve %, has certainly made is easier for her opponent....

NB Eva seems to have two people in her camp, one who was calling her Eee-va and the other Ava. The first then switched over to Ava. Do they not even know how the girls pronounces her name?

For a 14 year old Eva certainly has some impressive upper shoulder development. Hits a lovely forehand too... but Ali really is playing badly with so many errors, even Eva's error count has been high too. Ali will have seen this as a good draw to get a helpful 5 points, but she's certainly passing the opportunity up at this point. Losing from 40-0 up on her serve early in the second set seems to be symptomatic of her performance so far.

I agree, Michael. The first set was very close and Ali only really had her serve to blame herself for.

This second set has been a complete capitulation - does she not want to win? As you say, this is the 'easiest' 25k R1 draw she's going to get....

Now Ali is looking like she'd wish the court would open up and swallow her. She keeps throwing away winning positions with some absolutely awful shots. Eva is still hitting her forehand well, but this set also is looking like she can't believe her good fortune... All's she had to do is get her serves in and keep the ball in play.

Eventually a hold from Ali... some nerves at the end from Eva, who is up 6-4 *5-1

Well, that was that.

Leaving Ali's woes to one side, a big well done to Eva who took the ball on, held her nerve, and played very well, especially given her age.

Has trouble running forward, gets her feet caught under her, and has the classic big-hitting youngster thing where she's sometimes too surprised that the ball's come back, isn't expecting it and so isn't ready. But a very nice performance.

And, yes, helped a LOT by her opponent - truly weird....
